Wakefield has reported a 10.3" storm total for RIC. Seeing as how this is not the first time this sort of thing has happened and most reports in that part of town are to the tune of 12-16", please consider leaving a comment on their Facebook page letting them know that you are displeased with the quality control of their snow measurement data. This has been an ongoing issue since at least the Blizzard of 96 and I think it's time our voice is heard.

I think the official total was 11.4 at RIC

Still seems a little low.. If they don't include sleet then I really don't have much of a problem with their total..

The new number came about after they revised Friday's total. I can only hope that they will do the same thing for yesterday's. There is no reason the airport should have recorded less than 12" if spotter/co-op reports are to be believed.

Based on the number we have for the airport and assuming no additional changes, the storm goes down as the 11th largest snowstorm and the biggest recorded since February 1983.

Tidewater begs to differ. :cory:

Unfortunately, from a historical/climo standpoint Tidewater rarely gets in on these types of events. There are events where both RIC and ORF cash in but I'd tend to think that it would be nearly impossible for DCA, RIC, and ORF to all see 12+ from a single storm.

As Anthony has alluded to in the past RIC has a 60/40 NE/SE storm connection. I would guess that ORF is more closely linked to SE storms during the winter.

I've received an official response from the lead met at AKQ. It appears that the 11.4" total at the airport will stand. According to Wakefield, it is in line with the 12.4" total reported nearby at the Sandston co-op.

My wish is that they begin using the co-op totals as the official measurement in the near future. That is probably wishful thinking on my part though.

  • 2 weeks later...

Anyone still alive in this forum ? Gotta luv these near misses... Looks like tho someone may end up with a quick dusting later tonight depending on how the bands coming down come threw (if the precip even makes it past the mountains).. What you all think about the upcoming week? Weekend will be cold for sure...

Snow showers overnight in Henrico and Hanover Counties.  It was coming down nicely at home @11:30 p.m. when I arrived home from the UVA basketball game.  Snow continued until I went to bed shortly before 1:00 a.m.

I got up at 4:45, and the band of snow had moved east but left a nice half-inch of scenery on the ground and black ice on the roads.  After calling police for accident reports and checking with my offices that were opening at 5:30, I was able to wake up the Superintendent and convince him a 2-hour delay was urgently needed.

Got barely over a dusting here in Glen Allen Va and it's been snowing for over 4 hours now... Dry air just hasn't been able to let go in this area... It's been off & on very, very light snow/flurry here to whole time...Seems like a broken record for this area defiantly crazy how it always finds a way to dry slot... Looks like a decent band just north & south of this area .Prob will get into the good band in a few hours just before the changeover to sleet then rain happens of course..haha

Just made it to the office, delayed opening.  Maybe 2" in 23229 at Patterson and Forest at my house.   Not enough on the roads to plow very easily so actually more snow on the main roads than the blizzard for my commute.  Threat is for sliding but nobody will get stuck in this.

Yeah maybe a little over an inch in the city, just never got in the main band I guess. Just saw report of 8 inches in King George. That's your sweet spot- from CHO-Fredericksburg-Northern Neck. If we could get into any real consistent snow we could pile it up, but radar looks spotty for us. Thoughts on changeover time here?

Yeah, real spotty on the precip.  Looks like Wakefield had this one dead to rights and forecasted nicely.  The unknown precip reports are marching north for sure...guess lunchtime, noon or 1.  Getting ready to go check the medium range thread to see if there is anything down the road, weekend looks nice so I will enjoy that 60 degrees on Saturday.

Raleigh is holding steady with sleet and some snow, I think this could hang in for us longer than anticipated, maybe a 4pm changeover to freezing rain, and that could be the real problem. Trying to determine if I want to deal with 64 to the UVa game tonight. Could be a debacle both going and coming back
