Fairly common as the column saturates. The radar beam is angled, so as you get farther away from the radar location you pick up echoes from clouds or virga at a higher elevation.

 

Everything is going to plan.

Picked up dramatically out there in the last half hour.  No idea how you would accurately measure this, but we had about 4" OTG this morning, and probably around 8-9" in most clear spots now.  Was steady light snow from about 2:30 p.m. onward, but now, conditions have deteriorated quickly.
