Snowshack
North shore of Suffolk County, abosolutly ripping right now out that way. It really is, visibility under 1/10th where I am. Good call by Pamela earlier for this area.
SnowGoose69
Beautiful shots, Don. Today's heavy snow can be explained by the beautiful 130 to 170 knot jet streak in the Ohio Valley and the Mid Atlantic. http://synoptic.envsci.rutgers.edu/dougsimo/3000606.gif This setup reminded me of 2/6/93 quite a bit, that boundary came in more from the north and was slower moving so it was a 6-8 hour duration event but the accumulations may be close in many areas and neither was forecast well. HI Snowgoose, Can you explain why the jet streak helped. Thanks.
donsutherland1
1.8...if NYC reports 0.5 inches again I'll definitely contact Upton, they were wrong the other day, it was 1.0 on the nose The Park likely used a 10:1 ratio and estimated the snowfall. All other locations (EWR, LGA, JFK, BDR, and ISP) had ratios > 10:

Great image of the jet streat. In the end, there were two periods where the visibility fell to 1/4 mile or a little less. The finally tally wound up close to 2". Computer Guy
Nice quick hitting storm. Car had about an inch on it before cleaning it off at 7:45. Traffic was mess, but that's usually the case regardless of precip type.

NorthShoreWx
Another interesting aspect of this event...while there won't be significant drifting, small drifts will be in unusual locations due to the southerly component to the wind.

All other locations (EWR, LGA, JFK, BDR, and ISP) had ratios > 10:1 Yup, there was one person there it seemed the past 2 winters we were jokingly calling "The Converter" because they had several events where they clearly reported a dead 10 to 1 equivalent on the QPF

JFK only .03" LGA only .06" NYC only .07" If they convert to 10 to 1, it would be a joke. But I wouldn't be surprised.
