WVclimo
Looking through MRB climo records this morning, I only found five instances with measurable snowfall in November followed by no snow in December. Mixed results as far as totals for those winters. 1953-54: 19.9" 1964-65: 21.3" 1972-73: 3.0" 1978-79: 39.5" 1987-88: 9.9"

WinterWxLuvr
Latest NAM and GPS show a more significant frozen threat late tomorrow night. Precip is heavier and looks noticeably quicker to arrive. That's a monster high just north of NH and quite a CAD signature.
WinterWxLuvr
Verbatim it looks like it gets pretty close to the metro areas, if only for a short period, right? Those graphics are hard to read...but it is definitely wetter and faster to arrive. Also showing low dew points right up to the precip start....upper teens for my area. I can see us falling below freezing quickly and with that high sitting up there it might take a while to get the temps back above freezing. WinterWxLuvr
I still think the possibility exists for late tonight/tomorrow morning to be a more significant event than is being forecast.
mitchnick
I still think the possibility exists for late tonight/tomorrow morning to be a more significant event than is being forecast. verbatim, GFS says it starts as sleet even in the DCA/BWI area http://mag.ncep.noaa.gov/Image.php?image=data%2Fgfs%2F12%2Fgfs_namer_024_dom_precip_type.gif&model=gfs&area=namer&storm=&cycle=12¶m=dom_precip_type&fhr=024&group=Model+Guidance&imageSize=M&preselected_formatted_cycle_date=20150102+12+UTC&ps=model&use_mins=no&scrollx=0&scrolly=93 then turns to ice before changing to rain http://mag.ncep.noaa.gov/Image.php?image=data%2Fgfs%2F12%2Fgfs_namer_030_dom_precip_type.gif&model=gfs&area=namer&storm=&cycle=12¶m=dom_precip_type&fhr=030&group=Model+Guidance&imageSize=M&ps=model&use_mins=no&preselected_formatted_cycle_date=20150102+12+UTC&scrollx=0&scrolly=93 I imagine you would see more than us, of course

IWM/Tropicaltidbits show a lot of that Sleet/ZR area as rain. I guess the question is, which is correct? one would think that the NCEP site would provide more accurate precip-type maps for "their" model, but then I guess we'll know whether that's asking too much EDIT: soundings may provide the real clue I suppose

WinterWxLuvr
This has the potential to cause some slippery conditions. The ground is cold and the timing of precip couldn't be better. With the soundings Mitch posted, the low dewpoints, and rapid increase in precip, I wouldn't be surprised to see a period of snow to start.
