I'd just like to check out with what the new GFS says verbatim right now. Looks like heavy snow to rain ending with more heavy snow. Not ideal, but in winters like this I can't be picky.

I swear I'm moving to winston salem one day.  All you "I-40ers" always come out on top of marginal stuff!

Actually, the past few years that has been eastern NC.

But if you move here you'll start wishing you lived in Boone or Roanoke or something. The grass is always greener. :)

Nah, Fayetteville is where its at... According to NC State Climate extremes, Fayetteville's top 2 single day snowfalls are bigger than any record snow in other major cities (like Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Charlotte, Wilmington, etc.) east of the mountains...

Can't beat 2, 2 foot snows...

#1 24.0 inches March 2, 1927 Fayetteville PWC

#2 23.0 inches December 11, 1958 Pope AFB

Greensboro does suck at big snows. I seems like we never get one-footers. It's been many decades. I think the biggest storm on record was 20" in 1930.

And the past few years areas east of Raleigh have had bigger totals from single storms than Raleigh has.

They are all neck & neck in the top 5, March 2, 1927 still officially stands as the record for Guilford County w/ 20 inches. Hard to believe how many times I've seen March 1927 across east-central NC in the top 5 snows, what an incredible storm that must have been.. This is what the NWS in Sterling, Virginia had to say...

"March 1-3, 1927High winds around the nor'easter gusted to 62 mph at Cape Henry and 52 mph at Norfolk. Heavy snow fell across North Carolina into Virginia and travel was delayed for 2 to 3 days. In Virginia Beach, high tide and heavy surf on March 2 inflicted considerable damage. The beaches in some places were washed back 50 feet and denuded of the overlying sand so that the clay beneath was exposed. The large hotel in Virginia Beach and other buildings were severely damaged along with the boardwalk and other protective structures."

I don't if I should officially count Goldsboro & Edonton, NC as a major cities east of the mountains but they both picked up an astounding 26 inches of snow w/ the storm in March 1927. It's hard to fathom these kind of amounts not just in the coastal plain but across a majority of the state, very impressive indeed...

You can add Pinehurst to that list of 26 as well...

Did you get that image from another poster at another place? You know.....like you take pictures others post here to post over there to try an make you look smarter? BTW.....don't do that again   ;)

I wasn't doing it to look smarter. I was doing it just to share information. I thought that was the whole point of the board. What is wrong with that? Is there a rule against these maps being posted?
