Moved to GA in June 92. March 93 was my first GA snow. Friends said 92 snow was a heavy wet snow, but don't know how much.

The Jan 1992 was a beautiful, very heavy, WET snow. Absolutely gorgeous. It's the first snow I really remember and it was amazing. I remember almost every detail that day. Went to Shoney's to eat breakfast that morning. Got home and I think in the early afternoon heavy wet flakes started to fall.

So your argument is we need to add another thread because it is in too many threads.  I'll have to think about that one for a while.  Get back to me in about 5 days.

Beat me to it  :P

Seriously tho........IF it's still around this weekend, then game on for those that want to discuss it in a separate thread. I understand it's what "everyone" is talking about.....and they are talking about it because it's what we do and that's the only game in town for most of us. Just like it's been about every 14 days since the end of fall, before Lucy pulls the football away and snaps us back to reality. We've heard all the arguments "for" starting a thread and "against" starting a thread for the past few years, and what we are doing now is somewhere in the middle. It's not being big, controlling meanies, but rather a nice medium that satisfies the majority while keeping this forum running as smoothly as possible.

I still can't get over how unprepared everyone was last January. I mean, to me the fact that temps were forecast to be so cold was a sign that it was going to be much worse than your typical Atlanta snow. I just thought it was so obvious that it was going to be very bad given the extremely low temps.

I agree on the temps, but I think the biggest issue was that TV and radio mets had played down potential accumulation. By the time they started changing their forecasts' folks and gone to work and school. By the time people started to go home, it was too late and the roads were an ice rink.

For the love of all that is holy, can we make this happen.

It was powdery snow on 2/13 and plenty cold but it was never that heavy and only reached 4" or so.  Thought it was another big bust until the ULL came in and we sat in that very heavy band all morning and pushing our totals up close to a foot.  It was the most beautiful sight, but once it rolled out... drip, drip, drip.  I would've traded in less snow for more cold afterward.

Ah, I don't know why I said rain... no way you guys would rain while it's 21 here, haha.  I wasn't sure if you all tainted, but you all did get snow, I see.  Did the initial WAA precip just kind of miss your area?  It was really heavy here and pretty great, though we changed over to sleet sooner than I kind of expected into the evening, unfortunately.  Another storm with a retreating HP...

It was interesting when the Euro started showing the ULL thump a couple days before the storm.  I remember one run it had it over this area and dropped a good 20".  Of course, as it turns out Frosty's area did get 19" or so, if I remember right.  The Euro was moving the ULL thump around in the last few runs, but it did happen and was probably even more potent than it showed.

I need my foot.  NW trend FTW.  :weenie: ;)

Is CAD expected to play a factor for the potential storm next weekend ? I ask that because it shows almost no snow in AL and the snow increases as you go east and north. 6"+ in Augusta and almost nothing in Birmingham.

Of course this is just banter at this point, but verbatim it would not be cold enough. Here's the dew points right at the hart of the storm:

I mean, to me the fact that temps were forecast to be so cold was a sign that it was going to be much worse than your typical Atlanta snow. I just thought it was so obvious that it was going to be very bad given the extremely low temps. Did everyone just completely disregard the forecasted temps that day ? I think a lot of people just assumed it would be your typical 2" Atlanta snow without actually looking at the temps. I had to be at work at like 1pm that day and I called my employer before the snow even started to let them know I wouldn't be coming in. They were shocked and asked why. Needless to say, around 12pm they sent everyone home.

You just said it.  Your employer had no clue.  They had no clue because the information didn't get out.  There's a lot of reasons why the information didn't get out, but it didn't.  So nobody closed.

Generally speaking, 1) if it falls during the day, snow usually doesn't "stick" here;  and 2) forecasts bust here more than they materialize, it seems.  So a tv or radio met saying "there might be an inch or two of snow" gets the kids excited but not much else. Around here, when a met says "you might see an inch or two of snow", what usually happens is flurries that don't stick to anything. Or dark, cloudy, windy, and no precip at all.  So people hearing that think "oh, my commute will be a little longer, just like when it rains".  The don't usually think "oh crap, 2 inches of snow is going to stick to the roads mid afternoon, immediately freeze on the surface, and everything's gonna shut down".

I'll just selfishly say I hope the western edge of that thing turns out to be 100 miles further west than it is on that clown. :)  Not that an 11-12 day clown is worth the electricity and processing power consumed to create it, heh.

So with this storm apparently cooking in the feb 1-3 timeframe, I've seen people saying around 2 inches for most of nc, increasing higher the further west you go. But I don't see too many coastal nc/sc folks chiming in. Any chance Myrtle beach, sc is registering any accumulation at this point in time? Or anywhere north east sc/ south east nc? Thanks :) and good luck to everyone!

Well the 18z looks more like it as far as temps go.  RDU is right on the line.  That's more of what I'm used to.  In all seriousness though, long way to go to worry about that.  The thing I like seeing at this range is there is a storm.

EDIT:  I'm looking at hr 240

The Euro had the 850mb freezing line in Orlando. I think everyone at least has a chance.

It's exciting to have an active weather pattern coming up snow or not. there are quite a few weather systems coming through in the next couple weeks...The models have been trying so hard to get something to work out they might finally be on to something... the way this winter has gone one has to caution when getting excited about anything this far out.. I have got to say this setup reminds me of 1/28 of last year.. Gfs sniffed that one out from about this same time frame.the storm had ensemble and operational support. However what ever snow is shown most of it will probably be sleet unless the whole column is below freezing this time... This forum is going to be a mad house the next couple weeks I hope everyone is ready for this roller coaster we are about to go on..

I don't think there's any city more snow starved than Nashville. A part of me hopes that Nashville gets buried. They haven't had a snow greater than 1" in 4 years. Unreal.

Hard to believe.  Nashville was the jackpot on this run.  Probably around 10" or so.

Just give up people! Stop torturing yourselves!! Go enjoy the longer evenings, the cool breezes like a fall evening and put down your spring lawn treatments. If it snows, it snows. Let it be a surprise. This place has become almost toxic this year. We all need a gutter snapping storm, but trying to model hug 10 day trends that never make it to 7 days will seriously wreck your mental state.

Tonight I am going on a beautiful walk with my dog in the middle of january in the triad. I'll take it.....
