Remembering the Boxing Day Blizzard

Four years ago today many of us watched in awe as one of the strongest KU storms ever beared down on the area.

Whether it be the incredible winds and blizzard conditions well inland, the insane snowfall rates or the roller coaster ride on the modeling, it is safe to say that this storm will live forever in our hearts.

Please feel free to share your memories here...

Just a great storm.  Models lost in the mid range as per tradition with alot of these, but it came roaring back-loved tracking it on X-mas day as each model run got better and better, blizzard warnings, the whole 9 yards!

Best part was listening to the weather agencies in denial right up to Xmas eve...even with multi model support

Well we talk about this storm so much it's only fair it gets its own thread.

Greatest storm I've experienced narrowly outweighing PD II. Didn't live in the tristate area so never experienced 95/96 although family members did and that's the only snowstorm they remember nearly 20 years later.

Anyway Boxing Day was just the perfect combination of a surprise positive, strongest winds in a snow event I've seen, intense rates, and it began an epic 30 day winter pattern.

Btw Great pics everyone.

I never understood that. If the model data had changed that dramatically, why not just admit it? Especially with the storm occuring around a high travel period.

Because when something changes so rapidly there's always a reason as to why. I actually don't blame sources whether weather or media outlets to play it safe during such cases. I don't know how often they experienced such a rapid model change so I can see why they might question the data set.

Didn't they state that the models initialized incorrectly? And therefore it was bad data.. I believe it was the GFS that was the first to show the blizzard.

I remember telling my boss that I wasn't going to make it in on Monday. The office being in Whippany, but my boss living out in Flanders. Thing was, I was in Verona at the time... He didn't believe me when I told him that we had received over two feet (he got about 5") ... I had to send him pictures in order to get out of trouble, lol - I remember watching that deformation band setting up overhead on radar & was in complete awe.

Thanks for making the thread Isentropic, and the awesome photos forky. Started with the famous "initialization errors", which I know made most of us step back and say "wow wait a second here". As Sleetstorm said, this was a true blizzard that hammered the area. 2 feet of snow and such strong winds during and after the heavy snows. Snow bands that pushed through, and then redeveloped over the same areas. An awesome winter overall, with another 18" that fell one month from the date of this storm also

Good morning that storm created immense havoc in N.Y.C on many levels, mom was in the hospital that day and i drive pops to the hospital at the height of the storm there were no plows to be seen. The roads were treacherous and my niece from florida   was with us jumping for joy because this event was her first snow fall. Windshield wipers were useless other than that a storm of epic proportions.see ya

What was most impressive to me was the fact that it rained for a time here. It was pouring too, I think it was doing so for a couple of hours at least. What impressed me was that even after pouring rain, it flipped to snow and we still managed to get a foot. You just don't see that everyday. The wind was legit too. Windows in the house were rattling

This storm was better than 96 for me personally, just because I was able to track it on models and witnessed the epic flip from nada to a huge event. Snowfall amounts here were similar to 96, ended up with around 30 inches from both events. Winds seemed higher with Boxing Day compared to 96 but that could just be my memory. Duration tho is what 96 has on Boxing Day and of course the widespread heavy snowfall amounts. Boxing Day was the NYC areas storm.
