We had snow off and on after 10pm and 5 now at DTW.

KDTW 140626Z 35003KT 2 1/2SM -SN BR OVC008 M15/M17 A3045 RMK AO2 TWR VIS 4 P0000 $

Pretty impressive considering the radar is completely blank.

We bottomed out around 3F at 11pm as the temp oscillated overnight between 4F and 8F. Instead of plummeting below zero under clear skies as expected, light snow fell all night and woke up to 0.4" of air fluff on the board here & DTW. In fact, DTW has reported light snow for 9 hours straight now.

Wish I would have had time to take pictures this morning, because the vegetation was beautiful looking with all the hoar frost on it.

The trees that were grouped by themselves seem to have the most frost on them.

-4° for a low really early this morning. Temp bounced up towards sunrise to above 0°.

American models seem to be having some issues with the magnitude of the warmup on Saturday, especially when looking at the raw output.  Whether's it the snowcover or something else, who knows.

Here are the 12z GFS and NAM forecast soundings for LAF valid 21z Saturday.  With decent low level S/SW flow, no precip and possibly some sun, the strength of this inversion seems questionable.  MEX has 45 here on Saturday, which seems closer to what will actually happen imo.

I think there's a good chance of LAF hitting at least 50˚ on Saturday. Classic recipe for an overachiever.

I wouldn't go that high but I can't say I'd be shocked.  I think it'd be a lock without snow on the ground.

Edit:  we are talking about LAF, not KTIM.  :P

LAF.

Friday should start melting some snow with sunshine and temps around freezing, so I don't think it'll be a big factor. MEX has some real toasty temps just to our south, and I think that'll translate into our area. Just seems we always go higher than progged on days like Saturday. We shall see.

And as much as it's been a pretty good start to January for us, with snow - cold - snow cover...some road surfaces need a thaw here, like my parking lot. It's a disaster right now.

Good point about Friday.  Could start losing some but it shouldn't take a big hit until Saturday.  Saturday looks to come up short on the classic snow eating trifecta (windy, warm, high dewpoints) as it looks like dews may only peak in the low to mid 30s here so it'll be interesting to see how much survives.  But even after Saturday, we may be dealing with some days with highs above freezing.

I think we'll be pretty much snow free by the end of the weekend. Good period of sun and warm enough temps should do the trick. Hopefully we'll start replenishing next week...

Sure gonna miss being able to skate across campus to class. Looking forward to some warmer temps this weekend.

Few pics from out back but as alluded to pictures especially from point and shooter newbs just don't do hoar ones any justice.

nice!

Fluff topped winter landscape this morning glistened like a million diamonds. No matter how hard I try, this is the type of stuff that a pic can never do justice. This winter may have lacked much excitement thus far, but it certainly hasnt lacked photographic opportunities.

The Midwest has been just a smidge below normal this week.  From Jan. 7 to Jan. 13 (or Jan 8 to 14 for the 2nd chart) the temperature departures were -9F to -16F throughout all of the Midwest except Kansas. My dad informed me that Toledo OH has been 10.3F below normal for this month.  In January 2014, Toledo was 9.5F below normal (for the full 31 days.)
