cyclone77
I was expecting our inch of snow to melt today, but thick clouds have kept us below freezing until now. Just west of us the temp is well into the 40s with bright sunshine. Yeah we had about 2" on the ground after yesterday, and expected some it to melt today with 30s forecast. We then received another inch this morning, and temps can't get out of the mid 20s, so we still have a nice 3" on the ground.
hawkeye_wx
Impressive temp gradient across Iowa. Mid 20s near the MS river, to 50 at Des Moines, to nearly 60 in southwest Iowa. It seems like sw Iowa has been in the 50s about every day these last couple weeks. Northeast and southwest Iowa can be different worlds in winter and early spring. Chitown Storm
Too bad the sun isn't out or we might hit 50. Let's polish off the remaining dirty piles and start over in February...maybe?

michsnowfreak
I'm afraid to ask, but what did you call it "old Sol?" Just an old expression (I think its Latin for "sun" or "sun god" or something), no particular reason . Surprised you never heard it.

michsnowfreak
I see... It's not a name that's heard often, lol. No, its more old school. Perhaps it stuck in my head from the days when I went through years of newspaper articles on microfilm to get copies of weather/storm stories. They always seems to refer to a sunny day as "old sol shining" in the 1950s.
Geos
Only 27° here today for a high. Some pretty good snow showers out there this evening. Probably have 0.3" so far. That's really saying something this winter! Can tell there was a bit of a marginal warm layer aloft though - with the snowflakes in a granular form for awhile. Chitown Storm
Made it up to 45 today. I don't even have a single pile of snow left on the south side of the house, about an inch or less left everywhere else.

My first MN winter and it blows. But I'll save that for the banter thread. The only good part is that the ice on the lake thaws and refreezes nicely every few days so the hockey rink is in great shape.

The only good part is that the ice on the lake thaws and refreezes nicely every few days so the hockey rink is in great shape. Ditto that... This is my first MN winter, too, having moved here from the DC area last spring. What a disappointment this winter has been... especially after the last two winters in this neck of the woods. Got to 42 at the MPX office today which is about 4 miles from me as the crow flies. Here in Excelsior we still have a couple inches on the north side of the house and in the woods but the grass is making an appearance on the south side. At least its only January... still a few months left in the snow season up here. Let's shake this pattern up, please.
cyclone77
Temps actually reached the max later this evening for the day at 27. Warm air tried like hell to make it in here, but the subfreezing air held it's ground over western IL.
Geos
0.6" of snow for today. Looks like snow shower activity is waning now. Today was actually below normal all around 27/13.
hawkeye_wx
A thick cloud deck in the wake of yesterday's clipper is holding us back again today. We'll have to wait 'til tomorrow for one last mild day before winter returns this weekend.
cyclone77
Yeah a solid overcast all day here as well. Temp only made it to 30. Still 3" of snow on the ground.

Geos
See that Rapid City made it into the low 70s today! Pretty amazing for them in January. High 29° today. Had quite a bit of sun after 10 am or so.

Whitelakeroy
I am now on my 4th day with some partly to mostly sunny skies. Heck last week at Boyne I had 3 days in a row of solid sunshine. Just incredible for MI as I feel like I moved out of state.
hawkeye_wx
We have sunshine today, but the last three days have all been underperformers. The southeast flow, especially coming off the snowpack in the Quad Cities area, is really holding down the temp. Of course, sw Iowa is in the 50s and 60s for the umpteenth time this month. daddylonglegs
Amazing warmth....i see some spot in South Dakota made 80F for yesterday... who knows how accurate, but they must have had their shorts on out that way...crazy. Miami, FL was "only" 69F yesterday. Getting some sunbreaking through...34F. Don't need that extreme warmth this time of year...screw the trees up. Chitown Storm
Drove past a golf course at lunch. Several guys at the range. Green grass on the fairways now visible since the snow is 95% gone.
cyclone77
Southwest Iowa had temps pushing 70 today. That's extremely impressive, and about 35 degrees warmer than here. We lost about an inch today with temps reaching the mid 30s. Was forecast to make low to mid 40s, so it was a bust.
