January 2015 General Discussion

The Midwest has been just a smidge below normal this week. From Jan. 7 to Jan. 13 (or Jan 8 to 14 for the 2nd chart) the temperature departures were -9F to -16F throughout all of the Midwest except Kansas. My dad informed me that Toledo OH has been 10.3F below normal for this month. In January 2014, Toledo was 9.5F below normal (for the full 31 days.)

Thing so amazing about last years cold however is it came with 40" of snow in the month. Unbelievable how we were able to get that much precip yet the temperatures were just as ridiculous

Southwest Iowa has soared into the low 60s this afternoon.   :sizzle:

It is much cooler here in east-central Iowa... currently 38 at the airport and 40 in town.  It is common for sw Iowa to torch while we remain chilled with snowcover and a less favorable southeast wind.  It's still nice, though, along with bright sunshine.

You can see how the southwest half of Iowa warmed up so much more than the northeastern half today.  No snow in those areas.

Only the sw 2/5 of Iowa is snow-free, but over much of eastern Iowa the snow is pretty thin.  Only nw and far southeast Iowa have a bit thicker snow cover.  The open field near my house is mostly snow-free as of this morning, so much of the rest should melt away over the next few days.

First evening in a long time I have been able to sit back and relax without the need to do site checks for puddle refreezing and such. If all goes well the AM might have the same fate. Its getting easier for the 3:00 am starts as of late.

Tomorrow is wash the trucks day. Should of done it today but I decided a nap was more in order. Weather outside is delightful to say the least.

There has been a thin overcast all day with random peaks of sun. After starting out at 16F, DTW has skyrocketed all the way to 41F. So much for this being just the 9th January on record to not hit 40F lol. The snow has compacted only about an inch however, at least thus far.

I was surprised how little melted today. It's like a glacier.

The snow that is left is of high water content in the bottom layers and compressed by time. This contributed by the deep frost stopped the death of much snow. We will build on it, one clipper at a time....

I would say we lost 1.5" in depth. Avg depth right now is around 4", which of course includes deeper spots and lower spots. Can see grass tips in a few isolated places where drifting had the spots low to begin with, but overall still a solid, heavy snowcover. If we can avoid dewpoints spiking tonight (the models seem to be overdoing the dews, but Ive seen enough snowcover-depleting thaws in my time to talk before its over).
