I was expecting our inch of snow to melt today, but thick clouds have kept us below freezing until now.  Just west of us the temp is well into the 40s with bright sunshine.

Yeah we had about 2" on the ground after yesterday, and expected some it to melt today with 30s forecast.  We then received another inch this morning, and temps can't get out of the mid 20s, so we still have a nice 3" on the ground.

Impressive temp gradient across Iowa.  Mid 20s near the MS river, to 50 at Des Moines, to nearly 60 in southwest Iowa.

It seems like sw Iowa has been in the 50s about every day these last couple weeks.  Northeast and southwest Iowa can be different worlds in winter and early spring.

I see...

It's not a name that's heard often, lol.

No, its more old school. Perhaps it stuck in my head from the days when I went through years of newspaper articles on microfilm to get copies of weather/storm stories. They always seems to refer to a sunny day as "old sol shining" in the 1950s.

Only 27° here today for a high.

Some pretty good snow showers out there this evening. Probably have 0.3" so far. That's really saying something this winter!  :lmao:

Can tell there was a bit of a marginal warm layer aloft though - with the snowflakes in a granular form for awhile.

wow. Very rare for MN in the dead of winter. Didnt realize it was that warm up there today. Frigid here.

My first MN winter and it blows. But I'll save that for the banter thread. The only good part is that the ice on the lake thaws and refreezes nicely every few days so the hockey rink is in great shape.

Ditto that... This is my first MN winter, too, having moved here from the DC area last spring.  What a disappointment this winter has been... especially after the last two winters in this neck of the woods.  Got to 42 at the MPX office today which is about 4 miles from me as the crow flies.  Here in Excelsior we still have a couple inches on the north side of the house and in the woods but the grass is making an appearance on the south side.  At least its only January... still a few months left in the snow season up here.  Let's shake this pattern up, please.

Amazing warmth....i see some spot in South Dakota made 80F for yesterday...  who knows how accurate, but they must have had their shorts on out that way...crazy.  Miami, FL was "only" 69F yesterday.

Getting some sunbreaking through...34F.

Don't need that extreme warmth this time of year...screw the trees up.

I am now on my 4th day with some partly to mostly sunny skies.  Heck last week at Boyne I had 3 days in a row of solid sunshine.  Just incredible for MI as I feel like I moved out of state. :lmao:

cant remember the last time we had this much sun in a row (though for us its 3 days in a row).
