Ending out December with a Potential Pattern Change

What does that have to do with clouds? It's been cloudy everywhere. Only social misfits and 40yr olds living in basements logging onto Mr. Skin every night enjoy this.

Clouds in the winter are much better than sun for previously discussed reasons. No need to have sun out warming things up etc.. You live near the ocean..you pay for it,

You live away from the ocean.....what did you get for it this month?

Day after day of gloom is only attractive to people on the night shift.

I live far too close to the ocean for my liking.

I've had about 5.5 inches of snow this month

I prefer cloudy days in the winter for said reasons.

I like when it gets dark early

I agree with you.

This is the worst December that I can recall.

I guess "worst" and "worse" are subjective terms and it just depends on what a given individual values. Obviously we all want snow and cold; however if I am not getting snow, then I, personally, I would prefer nice weather in association with a pattern that is not going to be tantalizing as hell.

In simplistic terms, if a month is not going to feature snow, then:

1) I want to be comfortable

2) I do not want to be teased with faux potential that is never realized...ie thirtysomething degree rainers, and/or cold, dry surpression.

This December has been laden with the former more than any that I can readily recall, which renders this the worst December in memory for me.

Yes, worse than months like December 2006, which was a month filled with "nice", comfortable weather and confidence that it just wasn't going to snow.

Last January was my worst month because the snow was at times tantalizingly close (in SNE) and then when those snowstorms weren't missing us, it was just straight out raining in the 30s.  Heck we even got a 34F rainstorm when Dendrite got 10" of snow way to the SE of us.

You are right in that its more painful when snow is nearby but you are getting pretty much shut out.

Lol....sunset doesn't change with sky conditions. You've had 3 additional inches of snow.....and both of us have bare ground atm.

It's funny that we're talking about clouds because my wife is from the Midwest and we are always out there for Thanksgiving or Christmas and one of the things that I noticed right off the bat was that it was always cloudy and grey there.  We were out there for Thanksgiving and a couple weeks into December I joked that we brought the Midwest grey skies back with us.  It's funny how people are talking about it...we're just not used to it.

Really? I thought New England was the cloudy one. BTV is one of the cloudiest cities in the lower 48. Rochester, Buffalo, Pittsburgh all are too. Right up there with Seattle and Portland. Way before the Midwest cities.

Maybe it's just those of us on the NW upslope and Lake effect clouds, but look up cloudiest cities or places to avoid if you like sun. Interior Northeast including PA/NY/NNE are right at the top with the Pacific NW.

Like this type of list...Alaska, PacNW, and the Northeast.

Dude you are in the same boat..lol. Lets not spin things as usual.

Dude, he's had like 2 inches more snow than you this month which lasted on the ground a total of 30 hours longer...he's destroyed you this month for winter appeal.

You need to get inland and higher where it was deep winter this month...only 18 days with bare ground vs 20.

This is one of, if not the worst December ever. Sure it's been warmer and less snow (although not by much), but man this constant marine puke of 40 and drizzle is horrible. Just an all out horror show. Thank the heavens the sun will be out tomorrow.

My average temp range this month is like 10-11F. Usually I'm around 20F. It's ridiculous. It's mostly torch mins too.

I'm really excited about the season heading into the new year.

SWFE 2007-2009 pattern, followed by what I'm still confident will transition to a classic weak Nino season....best of both worlds.

I honestly would expect a the next 2-3 weeks to play  out very similarly to Dec 2007....pretty much an exact match with the configuration of the +NAO, -EPO/frigid s Canada and perhaps most importantly, the insanely negative QBO.

I know some think the QBO is overplayed, and quite frankly I don't know enough about it to really have a firm opinion either way, but what I do know is that when you couple an extremely negative QBO with the previosuly mentioned background configuration of the atmosphere, the events come fast and furiously. Absolutely epic pattern for nne.....does not get any better for them.

Good pattern for the northern half of sne, and serviceable across the south.

Awful from around NYC points s, but that is another story.

Botton line- NNE and CNE is ground zero probably into mid January, then I think the baton is passed to sne towards the latter third of January (about a month from now?). NNE/CNE probably take the wheel again at some point in March to close it out with a bang.

I think points south of NYC are just going to have to hope that at least one of the coastals during the sne run of prominance from later in January through February takes on more of a Miller A appeal, as most will likely be of the Miller B variety.

This is how I could see this season playing out.....but I think the window will be short for those south of NYC.

The very negative QBO may also make it tough to see a truly historic event, or blocking of an insanely long duration...so the upper echelon of seaons may be tough to attain this year.

But New England winter, nonetheless.

Cool.  That will give us SNE folks a good 3-4 weeks of possible winter until heavy, heavy Spring hits.

Awesome. Let me know when that updates for SNE getting the "baton" in mid February instead.

So glad I had my 3.75" this season.
