huronicane
https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/weather/asos/ doesn't list any DOD owned AWOS/ASOS stations. Does anyone know where I can find a list of those on military installations?
famartin
https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/weather/asos/ doesn't list any DOD owned AWOS/ASOS stations. Does anyone know where I can find a list of those on military installations? I don't think I've ever seen a list anywhere. You might have to manually check each state from NCDC's ASOS page: http://cdo.ncdc.noaa.gov/qclcd/QCLCD?prior=N
huronicane
I was trying to use the list here: http://aviationweather.gov/static/adds/metars/stations.txt But I'm not sure how accurate it is. For instance, KBKT is not listed as an AWOS, but it is an AWOS-III. Of course, I might just be confused too, and not sure of the difference between any METAR site and an AWOS/ASOS. At a glance, there appears to be numerous inaccuracies in that list. I would not trust it too much.
huronicane
I emailed Greg Thompson (keeper of the list) and he said "I'm sorry but I have no way to distinguish that myself and no advice on how to do so. Good luck." So unfortunately, I'm not sure there'll be an easy way to put together a comprehensive list.
huronicane
If I'm looking at a METAR, shouldn't it be noted in the remarks somewhere what's being used?
famartin
If I'm looking at a METAR, shouldn't it be noted in the remarks somewhere what's being used? There should be a remark as to whether there's some sort of automation, but it can be difficult to determine just what without a lot of background. Here are a few examples: KTTN 051653Z 07008KT 9SM OVC015 06/01 A3051 RMK AO2 SLP327 T00560006=KBLM 051655Z AUTO 06009KT 10SM BKN010 BKN023 OVC075 07/03 A3051 RMK AO1=KWRI 051658Z AUTO 07008KT 10SM FEW016 OVC065 09/05 A3047 RMK AO2 SLP322 T00870048= All of these are automated. TTN is an ASOS currently in Service Level C augmentation mode, so the "Auto" remark doesn't appear near the beginning, but the AO2 does appear in the remarks. BLM is a Federal AWOS; most Federal AWOS units have AO1 in the remarks, but some other stations also do. WRI is an AN/FMQ-19, which is the Air Force's equivalent to ASOS. You can also get stations like this: KMMU 051015Z AUTO 00000KT 10SM M02/M04 A3055 RMK AO2=KMMU 051035Z AUTO 00000KT 10SM M02/M04 A3056 RMK AO2=KMMU 051145Z 04004KT 10SM BKN030 M02/M04 A3059=KMMU 051245Z 04003KT 10SM SCT030 BKN250 M01/M03 A3059= MMU is a non-Federal AWOS during off-hours, but when someone is on-duty, only manual observations are issued. wxmeddler
If you had a lat/lon list of all stations and the locations of the bases then you could do some GIS and get most of them.

vortex95
And here is a list of all AWOS sites currently available. I haven't updated the file in several months, but below are the recent AWOS additions to NADIN that I know of. famartin
Attached is a list of all ASOS sites that are currently available. Note this list includes U.S. military sites overseas. Just a note that the air force and army installations are *not* true ASOS. Their designation is FMQ-19, they are produced by Coastal Environmental Systems, and their equipment and programming is slightly different. A close inspection of the reports they provide show differences especially in inclement weather. For example, they automatically report drizzle, something ASOS cannot do on its own (though the quality of those automatic drizzle reports is highly questionable). http://www.coastalenvironmental.com/service-fmq19.shtml
