Sometimes it is better to be negative; or, at the very least, to expect things to not turn out as you would have them...like they say, hope for the best, expect the worst...then, if you get an unfavorable outcome, your degree of disappointment will be mitigated significantly.  Moreover, if you get a favorable outcome, you will be pleasantly surprised.

The only one who has much say on the planning would be Nature, I would think...might be more accurate if you said everything is going as predicted...though that would depend on who made the prediction and what exactly was forecast to happen.

There are some here who are either very young or have never perused the annual snowfall charts for this region prior to the turn of the century. There is a Law of Averages...whether one likes it or not...and any anomalously wet or cold or hot or snowy period is eventually going to be followed up by numbers more in line with the average or less than average; the latter being Nature's way of compensating for its previous excesses.

Well I'm 15 but I know that the winters during my lifetime have been very anomalous and that a period like there shouldn't be another period of such winters for a long time.

The only exception to this would be if there were some genuine shift in the global or mesoscale climate paradigm underway; an occurrence which is not common but can never be utterly discounted...particularly because most of our current climate record must be charitably characterized as brief and not comprehensive.

more specifically between the Lindsey Storm (Feb 1969) and the suprise Jan 20th, 1978 storm and again between the Feb 1983 Blizzard and the MARCH 93  Storm of the Century,  i don't think there was anything greater than 8", if I'm not mistaken (from the city east)  We did have a Blizzard Watch or Warning posted for the Monday after The Giants beat the Broncos in Super Bowl XXI, but other that that we're talking many lean big snowfall years. By the way, how would you like to be a snowfreak and a die hard Giant fan during the 4th. quarter  of SUPER XXI, with the game in hand and the crawl on the bottom of the TV screen screaming Blizzard Warning for tomorrow. I WAS IN MY GLORY.

so far sensible weather reminds me of 1986 and 1991 ...1991-92 had very little snow with a snowy ending in March...1986-87 was great just to our south and we got 23-27" in the city...other dud el nino Decembers...some mild el nino December's with little snow...

Long Island snow fans had very little to get excited about between 2/11/1983 and March 1993...there was a nice Alberta clipper in early March 1984 that put down 7 or 8 inches...January & February 1987 featured about 3 medium snow events...there was another medium sized event in January 1988...the exciting Norlun Trough that put down a foot in central Suffolk on 12/13/1988...the Thanksgiving storm of 1989 that came close to 10 inches out east...the big February 1990 Norlun Event out east which put down over a foot over the Twin Forks...and a couple of medium events in February 1993...and that was all she wrote.

The 2nd event in March 1984 was a close call...some snow did fall over the area...but much of the fury was to the north...at one point, snow was falling in the Litchfield Hills at a rate of 4 inches per hour.

January 1982 was a great winter month around here...incredibly cold and pretty snowy...after that, the best winter month of 1981-82 was probably April...lol

Problem here is many posters on these boards are in their 20's..and expect 50 inches every year..We are not living in Lake Tahoe or Anchorage..that is not the climate..It's the coastal plain and about half of winter storms are rain or a mix..We have been getting a KU storm almost every year..unheard of in these parts..So this December is pretty typical. Most years you don''t get significant snow till after Christmas..and through history February is our snowiest month.I still think we will have a snowy January and February

December through February, about 75% of the precipitation that falls in NYC is rain, on average. Even in a place like Albany...close to half their winter time precipitation is rain...though probably a little less than that...as they may be at least twice as snowy as NYC...but they are also somewhat drier during the winter.

To get mostly snow from wire to wire in this part of the country...probably need to go above 1500' a.s.l. in southern New England or to some spot in northern New England away from the ocean.

I remember those lean years..seemed like the few storms that were supposed to hit us just about always missed...the young guys on here are definitely spoiled

since December 2009 NYC has seven storms 10" or more... before I was 20 years old NYC had many great snowstorms...1956-69 had nine in over 10"...from 1970 to 1992 there were only four in three seasons...since 1993 we got 18 over 10"...
