there's a reason why Upton averages more snow than NYC... :snowwindow:

Well ISP averages less than NYC (by 0.2 inches), and so do some of the other typical spots that get screwed like SE coastal CT (GON) into RI (UUU). It's not like the places getting hit hard today average much more snow than the city. Eastern LI into CT/RI is a snow hole. Even the Cape does better.

I think I'm moving to Suffolk . . .

Bad idea...property taxes are exorbitant...though, if you are coming from Nassau...they probably would be a bit lower...all things are relative, aren't they?

I think I've written on this oh about 10,000 times or so...what we would call, in the old days "a version of history too well known to merit debate."

But, if you do have any further questions regarding the matter...do feel free to consult my oeuvre!

There are several other repositories of wisdom that can provide guidance to you in this area as well...

Yet, for reasons unexplained...the myth persists...the world is, in many ways, a strange place.  People can get held in the grip of unusual and inaccurate theories...and for decades or more...not a single district or individual can find the courage, wisdom or perspective to escape...indeed...whole countries do go quite mad from time to time.  However, over the passage of time...delusions do pass and people do come to their senses...I wait soo earnestly for that day!

I'm not sure there needs to really be a debate. The averages are what they are. Someone measures for 30 years, NCDC adds it up and divides by 30 in accordance with WMO procedures for establishing climatic normals. The places I mentioned are all further north from NYC that average about the same or a little less, except for the Cape (CHH).

GON: 23.2 (co-op that's a bit inland)

JFK: 23.8

NYC: 25.1

UUU: 25.4 (co-op)

LGA: 26.9

CHH: 28.9

Having lived in the snow hole (or is that hell?) it sucked. And some of the other New England posters who have too can attest to how crappy of a place it is for snow, until you get to roughly EWB on east. I'm not saying NYC is a fantastic spot for snow sports or anything, but it is a huge concrete jungle of a city and further south unlike SE coastal CT which has maybe 100k population and a bit of latitude.

I never said New London CT was not a snow hole..it is...a bad one.  You are correct there.

When I lived there, I kept a running tally. Approximately 70% of storms changed over. Even though I no longer live there, I'm happy for the few that do to cash in, even if it's not a jackpot, because just remaining all snow is a win for that area.

My problem has always been with the misrepresentation regarding where I live...since time immemorial...the North Shore of central Long Island...derided from the beginning...lambasted & lampooned...but...still...the snow falls here like there is no tomorrow...which, I'm sure is a philosophy Don Draper could endorse...

Those of us in NJ shouldn't despair.  We've had some good ones in the last 10-15 years and we will get in on another doozy sooner than later.

This isn't even close to the bust of March 2001.  It's just going to be remembered as an over-hyped disappointment.  You do some post-analysis, learn what happened and take it with you for the rest of this winter and the next ten for that matter.

Every winter is different, every storm is different.

But how could that be since William H Rehnquist was the Chief Justice (in 1996).  Scalia was an Associate Justice and it would not be up to him...Rehnquist...raised in Wisconsin, was always reluctant to let the elements stand in the way of the normal conduct of business.

I wondered that too, but I seem to remember Scalia  having some say, but I could be misremembering it.

I remember Bill Rehnquist would have a snowfall contest outside the Supreme Court building when it snowed in DC...he derived a great deal of enjoyment from these competitive activities...he had been a weather observer while serving in North Africa during WW 2.

Think you might have overestimated the NJ population a bit there....

A lot of people in NJ thought NWS was on crack and didn't believe it for a second. Almost everyone I ran into Mon was skeptical. They always are.

the winter is turning out like 1965-66...It started mild...got cold in January...The snows came after the 21st...it was four events in two weeks...7" on January 30th...3" Feb. 2nd-3rd...another storm in late February...it was the last measurable snowfall that year...it had a very negative ao the end of January...This year is different and if the ao/nao gets its act together in February this winter will end differently...Hopefully for the better...

To tell ya the truth Unc, I am getting a bit long in the tooth and do not really want 30 inches of snow. 6- 12 is more than enough to keep my back aching, and that's WITH gas and electric snow throwers. I am also tired of wrestling with the big gas machine that is fickle to start. Several smaller storms like last year or 94 suit me fine.

it's closer to 2/6/10 for those of us a bit north of the Driscoll Bridge. I had about 6 this time, about 3 back then. And only a coating of sleet in march 01. Bear in mind though, that we'd had a pretty big storm already that winter on Dec 31, so that took the sting out of it a little. By the way in 2010 every single event was underwhelming in these parts. Dec 09, we had about 11 inches, Feb6, 3 in, Feb 11, 8-10, and Feb 26, 8 in. Boxing Day we were in the bullseye for a change.

I think we have some snowy times to go still this winter, despite feeling rather crumby about my newly fallen 5".....by the way, awesome call that you made 8-12" for the NYC area. Funny how it seemed ridiculous to everyone at the time ! That's a good dose of just calling what you see, rather than buying into any extreme totals from models or forecasts.

thanks...I watched Nick Gregory last night and he still had 20-30" for the city...I heard DT was still going with big amounts...I felt like Nick was going down with his ship by not throwing in the towel...10-15 should have been his call...

I felt the same way...as I get older(55 two days ago) the big storms are becoming too much of a hassle...you can give me these smaller storms several times a month and I'll be happy. That being said, I'm still disappointed I didn't get my 25" lol.

Really don't want to hear LI complain anymore. We can't manage a 20" as easily as them. Storms like Nemo and Blizzard of 2015 its easily 20 " +. Only storm that really hammered us was Boxing Day and I couldnt even manage 25 " + in that one. You guys do realise that when LI rains and it's snowing here we rarely get over 14 " +. But when we get shafted here LI EASILY gets 20" +. Just a few weeks ago East LI was giving up on the winter. Either way enjoy the snow days over there. Probably 2 days +.
