Bob Chill
Looking at vast analog and statistical data, it looks like a big -nao setting up apr/may with endless NE flow. We'll be scraping sea salt off our windshields.

We're gonna hit 60F The 60s may last into tomorrow, so we'll probably have two days with max temps in the 60s.

Woooo winter thunderstorms The craziest winter thunderstorms I can remember were 1/30/2013... 70 degrees and a tornado watch with an incoming squall line... HighStakes
We had pouring rain during Christmas in 86 and 2009 and we know what followed. We also had pouring rain in 2002. Maybe we are right where we need to be or maybe I'm having delusions of grandeur.

clueless
Chilly and light rain. I will take it any day. Keep the precip chances up this winter, throw in some cold air and we get flakes. It will be fine.

I remember watching the snow and mud wash down the sewer and thinking "i'm not sure this is worthy of calling a white Xmas" It also poured in that '86 event that High Stakes mentioned. I think I picked up over 2" of heavy rain in Silver Spring in that storm.

I remember watching the snow and mud wash down the sewer and thinking "i'm not sure this is worthy of calling a white Xmas" That was sickening. 19" of snow and it didn't even last a week. I think that might be part of the reason why I don't consider Dec. 09 in the same boat as Feb. 10.

I love falling snow, but right up there on my list is a lasting frozen landscape.
snowfan
Yeah, no real comparison with those storms. December 2009 barely slides into my all time top 5 and that's only because I don't remember PD I. Actually, despite the lower totals, March 93 goes above December 2009, so it's out of my personal top 5.

Chicago is a very stressful place to be a snow weenie... not as bad as DC, but for a place that has a reputation of getting harsh winters, they get screwed quite often. No, not really. They've had > 50" in 5 of the last 7 years, including 82" last year. Their average is 38", which they reach or surpass, on average, about every other season in the last 40 years. The two cities are worlds apart wrt snow.

They've done well in recent years, but I can recall many examples of them getting screwed over while Milwaukee or other places not very far did much better. I agree that they're worlds apart from DC and I wasn't comparing the two.

T. August
Chicago may get more snow, but they fall short in the "big storm" department. Chicago has never seen a snowfall greater than 23", and they've only had 5 greater than 18".

Chicago has never seen a snowfall greater than 23", and they've only had 5 greater than 18". While true, they've also had 15 seasons in the last 50 years with > 50". I'll trade that kind of consistency for the few really big storms the DC area has seen.
