Noticed some of the spring bulbs have sent up a little foliage the past week or two. Getting ready for spring already.

(This isn't abnormal during a warm stretch in winter, just saying, would not have expected to see this already after how November was...)

If the euro weeklies are right they might bloom by the end of Jan.?

We're all basking in spring-like temps, while Chitown Storm and bo are getting raked. Looks like Frank may have gotten in on some of the action too.

yes! 4" so far with 8" looking likely for a storm total. trees are so weighted down, some are touching my house. snow depth average is 28"... around 16" of very wet snow since Tuesday.

I never pay attention to spring bulbs (the only ones I have are tulips)so obviously I notice nothing except dormant winter landscape and ugly grass. But I have heard others on here remark similar things in other mild spells in the past...and it always surprises me. If the slightest mild spells causes a bit if foliage color or whatever, then we can deduce that this is a very common occurrence, & probably occurs in most winters not brutally cold from start to finish.Oh well the cold is on the doorstep then hopefully the snow!

thx chi! is that a lake you live on?

back side of the low has arrived and wind has started gusting, relieving some of the weight off the trees. Superior/and upslope enhancement really wringing out the snow right now.

Yep, fully recreational lake in the backyard. I'm about 5 mi due north of downtown STP. My brother and I are about to plow the hockey rink. Ice fisherman have been out since 5:30am. Winter is back after a 4 week break.

The lake would be amazing in the Summer!

good size limb has come down, blocking my way out. gonna have to get the 4 wheeler out and hook a strap to it. hope nothing takes the power out!

edit: ugh power is flickering

beautiful pics! funny to see wet snow that far north lol

You're right josh and I've heard it said a lot around here. Mostly wet snows all winter so far. I like the wet snow but it's tuff to move around. Snowing very hard. Be interested to see some of the final totals. Topping 8" here already with another 2 hours left and 2" perhaps.

We seem to almost always get powder here anymore. Its strange. I remember those scenic but sloppy wet snows from years ago, but now its usually powder. Even in the milder winters.

I would venture to guess a lot of weatherbo's snow is LES, which tends to be sort of "wet" in nature because of the warmer boundary layer temps.

In our case, it's mostly just bad luck. We've had very few marginal/slop storms around here lately (February 26th, 2013 being the closest).

After some rare sun yesterday we got this sunset

4165-800.jpg

stunning pic Josh. you post the best sunset pics!

Hockey rink has been plowed. Time to finally enjoy winter fun.

24F and falling.

great winter scene. I miss the lake across from me in Ellsworth!

Finally winding down here with between 8.5-9.2", so I'll say 8.8"

That's 20.3" since Tuesday. Depth is pushing 30". 2 tress down on my road, so I either wait on the road crews that might not plow here for 2 days or I get the chainsaw. Glad I just bought a 12pk of beer!

Nice!  My lake is now 80% water again today with temps in the 40s.  Every time we have been able to walk on the ice temps soar into the 40/50s and boom :frostymelt:    .  Looks like temps will finally hold below freezing starting this weekend so hopefully we can be ice skating by New Years eve!

Thanks :)

Since I didnt go due to our epic winter last year, regardless of how the rest of winter plays out...and it may be good, bad, or in the middle...I most definitely am planning a UP trip to the Marquette area.

Im sure it is bad luck....but I mean...it has snowed SO much lately (December notwithstanding)...and the few times we get a wet snow its either that super soggy slush in marginal temps (as you mentioned) that it doesnt really adhere to the trees like the pics above...or a light fall of snow around an inch or so (see Nov 16) so while it does adhere to the trees, it is not a total winter wonderland scene (like above).

And do not get me wrong...i LOVE powder...its my favorite by a mile over wet snow....and often times powder will drape itself on the tree limbs and conifers beautifully, its just not a full fledged plaster. We did get a nice plaster with our grand finale snow on April 15th last winter, and we had a few gorgeous ones in March 2011...but the ratio of powder to wet has been far far exceeding our typical ratio down here. Even in the torch winter of 2011-12, most of our snows were powder

 As interesting as that would be, they seem to bloom about the same time every year regardless of the temperature trends...even March 2012 only sent them up and blooming about 2 1/2 weeks earlier than usual, and that was like a once in a lifetime type heatwave. Likewise, earlier this year they were blooming amongst the snow in April.

This is beautiful. Can't believe we're both in the same state, albeit hundreds of miles apart. Very jealous.
