Chinook
My backyard did about as well as anybody below 9000ft on this snowfall map. That almost never happens.
Chinook
If the SLP gets to 1060mb in Alberta, that will be about the highest I've seen in the Western Hemisphere.
frontranger8
Looks like the Mountain West will be getting payback for the 7-9 degrees above normal that some areas have had this month. MonthTDeptUS.png 5 days ago, DEN was running almost 7 degrees normal for the month. After today, they'll be down to about +4.5, and by the end of the month, they might actually be close to normal. That's what a few -20 to -30 departures will do.
Chinook
There's not a lot of talk around town about the snow and cold. There's a Winter weather advisory that was just issued for Denver Metro. NWS considering a wind chill advisory at some point.

There's a Winter weather advisory that was just issued for Denver Metro. NWS considering a wind chill advisory at some point. DEN could very well pull off a sub-zero day on Tuesday. If they do, it will be their third sub-zero day since 2011...they saw none from 1997-2010.
castlerockwx
Not quite enough focus on the snow with this system from NWS and media outlets. Wonder why they seem to be discounting model QPF outputs coupled with incredible ratios. Palmer Divide totals could easily push a 12". Maybe its just "too cold" for good snow. We'll see how things shake out I guess.
Chinook
They are holding off on the big guns (winter storm watch/winter storm warning) because the snow will fall slowly. There may not be a 12-hour period where it amounts more than 4" in any given place. I am rooting for some more snow with high ratios. It may be darn slippery though, even considering salt tends not to work under 5 degrees F. Looking back to 2006 again, Fort Collins had 28" in 8-9 days with 2 to 2.5" water content in that snow. Since these dual storms hit just after the winter solstice, and January turned out pretty cold, Fort Collins had snow on the ground continuously for about 59 days. It was just shy of the record length of continuous snow for the CSU Weather Station. Perhaps in 2014-2015 we could hit 30+ days with snow on the ground. Chinook
Finally the 00z NAM has caught up with the GFS on synoptic features of this snowstorm.
frontranger8
Disappointing storm here so far. The past few hours were supposed to have the heaviest snowfall, but it's been pretty light. Only 1.5" of accumulation so far for me. It looks like areas to the south and east have done considerably better. I'll be surprised if I end up with 4" at this point. castlerockwx
So far about 2.5" outside of Castle Rock. Hoping radar starts to fill back in once the Jet retreats North overnight.
frontranger8
So far about 2.5" outside of Castle Rock. Hoping radar starts to fill back in once the Jet retreats North overnight. Yeah, I see the NWS did mention that, so it does sound more promising. Either way, will be interesting to see how cold we end up tomorrow. This will be the region's second record-shattering cold wave in two months, and third since February 2014. Records for tomorrow, high/low. Denver: 11/-8. NWS going with 0/-17 Boulder: 16/-11. NWS going with -2/-11 Fort Collins: 2/-14. NWS going with 1/-17 Greeley: 12/-13. NWS going with 0/-18 Cheyenne: 0/-21. NWS going with -3/-21 Colorado Springs: 9/-10. NWS going with 6/-13. Of course, some of these lows will actually occur on the 31st instead of the 30th. A lot will depend on how quickly we clear out tomorrow night. castlerockwx
Thought snow would crank back up in the evening, but no such luck. Still holding out hope for the jet creating some instability in the wee hours of the morning.
Chinook
It has been snowing for nearly 12 hours now. I don't think we have gotten much more than 1.5". The radar isn't even interesting. Now of course if this was the East Coast, this thread would have had 80 posts today.
snownut
Arctic front was serious here yesterday. NWS forecast was 1-3 " Ended up with 9-3/4" of super light fluffy powder.. Blizzard like conditions at times yesterday afternoon and evening. 4.9 is my low so far this morning. My first season here in my new home but have noticed NNE winds create the best storms, ice inversions and fog here. Should be some great powdery snow totals throughout the western mountains from this ? Any western posters out there?
Mercurial
Currently in West Yellowstone, MT. It's -37 right now. It's the coldest I've ever felt by about 7 degrees.
frontranger8
27 straight hours of mostly drizzle snow has amounted to about 3" here (on top of the 4" pack already on the ground). DEN managed to get 5.4" yesterday, though, so there's definitely been better precip to the east.

castlerockwx
We ended up getting down to -20. This is the coldest temperature I've ever expierenced. Two systems to keep an eye on. SW low and a cold front over the weekend. Both look to provide light precip into the area. Wouldn't be surprised if one of these out produces what models are showing...just a hunch

frontranger8
DEN hit -19, the same low they recorded in February 2014. -19 is the coldest temp for DEN since Dec 1990. There's been an impressive string of Arctic outbreaks here since 2008: Dec 2008, Oct 2009, Dec 2009, Feb 2011, Feb 2014, Nov 2014, and now Dec 2014. Obviously, this year really stands out.
