powderfreak
The extreme LES? Yes, often. It's happened in October too. This is fairly extreme though, even by their standards. BUF's AFD's have been great...even telling folks not to storm chase. .NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... ...INCREDIBLE LAKE EFFECT SNOW EVENT TO CONTINUE OVERNIGHT TONIGHT WITH NEAR BLIZZARD CONDITIONS BEFORE SHIFTING NORTHWARD AND DIMINISHING DURING THE DAY WEDNESDAY... OFF LAKE ERIE...RAP ANALYSIS EARLIER THIS EVENING SHOWED A SLIGHT BACKING TO THE LOW LEVEL WINDS...WITH THE NEARLY STEADY STATE RADAR RETURNS MOVING JUST A MILE OR SO TO THE NORTH. HOWEVER ANALYSIS NOW SHOWS SOME EXPECTED VEERING WITH A SECOND SOUTHERN BAND SNOW STARTING TO COMPETE WITH THE MAIN DOMINANT BAND. THERE ARE TWO SCENARIOS THAT MAY RESULT - THE FIRST BAND MAY FALL APART WITH A MUCH WEAKER SECOND BAND FOCUSED MAINLY OVER FAR SOUTHERN ERIE COUNTY AND WESTERN SOUTHERN TIER...OR A SOUTHERN SHIFT OF THE PRIMARY BAND...BUT STAYING OVER THE SOUTHTOWNS AND BOSTON HILLS. OUR CURRENT FORECAST HAS THE LATTER IN MIND...BUT CONFIDENCE IS LOW ON WHICH SCENARIO WILL PAN OUT AT THIS TIME. REGARDLESS...THE SNOW CONTINUES TO PILE UP WITH EXTREME AMOUNTS SHOWING UP ALL OVER SOCIAL MEDIA. A NOTE TO ANY CURIOUS NORTHTOWNS FOLK - PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DRIVE SOUTH INTO THE BAND. TO BE BLUNT - IT IS NOT SAFE. A SAFETY SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT HAS ALSO BEEN ISSUED TO HIGHLIGHT OTHER SAFETY CONCERNS.
BuffaloWeather
This looks on course to be record breaking though or not? This will rival 1977 as the most insane storm to ever hit Western New York. I don't think it will pass that storm though. We shall see...

WNash
Has this ever happened in November like this? Yeah... in fact, the Delta-Ts that lead to such huge lapse rates are far more likely to be larger in this part of the season than later, leading to large early season events. No doubt...I'm not downplaying it by any means. I'm just saying there's been big events like this before in their history.
powderfreak
In what way? Remember this one? http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/weather/news/2001/2001-12-28-buffalo-snow.htm I think in terms of time...they are hitting levels that it took other events days and days to reach. Some spots are showing 50"+ in under 24 hours. I think the difference in other events they were getting those amounts in like 3 days.

I have to agree there, this intensity for such a long time(band not moving at all) is just mind blowing. Some places have 60" just since yesterday. That is utterly mind blowing!! CoastalWx
Well the state record is 77" in 24hr. I don't think the NWS made that official since the guy supposedly measure more frequently than every 6 hrs. But the idea is there.

powderfreak
Well the state record is 77" in 24hr.I thought that was discredited? I think Adams with 68" is the state record. This storm is close. Edit...yes Adams is the official state record on January 9th, 1976. They had 36" in 9 hours too that day.

Not sure who the highest in that event was though.Peeps be jumpin' down my throat, but again...I'm not poopooing it. It's about as extreme as it gets for that localized jackpot area. It's feast or famine though.

We all want the latest and greatest event to be THE BEST EVER! lol. I just think even for them, this is pretty nuts going by the photos. I wonder if anyone is actually measuring every 6 hours? Or if there's just 48-60" on the ground? Looks like there should be depths around 5 feet from some of these photos.
dendrite
I don't think the NWS made that official since the guy supposedly measure more frequently than every 6 hrs. But the idea is there.Yeah I seem to recall that now.I don't even know how anyone there is measuring this. You have snow blowing out of trees, off of buildings, around Scott Norwood's legs and it gets deposited in the most "sheltered" area possible. I would imagine that after clearing 15"/6hr that your measuring area wants to just fill back in with 4ft around it and 30-40mph winds.

ROOSTA
Saw this coming 10 days ago. The intensity of the cold with an almost perfect wind trajectory, wall-ah an extreme event. Extreme as in record breaking. Could be the year of several record snow events. One can hope.

Looks like there should be depths around 5 feet from some of these photos. It has to be getting to the point where it's just too much snow to sustain itself. That 2001 BUF event they had 80 something inches with a max depth of 45" I believe. They could theoretically get 1ft new in 6hrs and see a negligible increase in the depth.
