Winter 2014-15 Short Term Discussion

Chicago Storm

for the Chicago-Laf crowd:

That must be a result of last night's run that they were discussing in the other thread. Let's see, early winter buckled flow = slower trough movement than models suggest at this time frame = northwest trend as system cuts harder = congrats wisconsinji.

Looking like snow band will shift south later...we shall see. Few early morning shots today. My only gripe about all this wind? It leaves grass tips exposed in spots and there are leaves skipping across the snow from some who dont rake lol. Had 2.2" on 0.12" water yesterday, just a T so far today.

Almost 5" in Sterling  Heights.

Only had a trace today. Snow settled some more with wind, but average depth still rounds to 2". Those stuck in that band in the far northern burbs had as much as 7-8" in isolated spots fall over the last two days. The NWS at DTX was in the band, they picked up a 2-day total of 6.9", of which youd estimate a good 5.5" is pure LES. In contrast, at DTW airport, the total snowfall was 2.1", of which only 0.7" was LES.

I'd estimate that we picked up about 2" of LES last night, with a snow depth around 3" (it was less than 1" by yesterday evening).

Looks like a period of sleet/snow Monday morning ahead of an approaching trough. Wet bulbing effects should should cause most of the column to fall below freezing, although a small warm wedge near 850mb might allow some sleet to mix in. While it won't amount to much, its nice to have some accumulating snow in this dismal pattern.

Anything relevant brewing?

Pretty much the below comments sum it up, so nothing unless you're in IA/M/WI/MI with the light event this weekend. Have to wait till early January to see if the next opportunity for something interesting pans out or not.

Most of the sub forum will be predicting rain amounts.

Euro has a band of DAB to an inch or two from Iowa into WI.  Looks like a few tenths of rain followed by a half hour of light snow for northern IL.
