Anyone remember this one?  I was in NW IN and it started off as rain and then flipped to snow and produced some of the biggest snowflakes I've seen to this day.  I mean huge, almost like tennis balls falling out of the sky.  Picked up some accumulation...can't remember exactly how much but I want to say an inch or two.

One of those storms that sorta gets lost to history.  This was the winter that featured the Nino from hell and was not that good for the most part, though the storm on 3/9/98 was very enjoyable where I was.

Yeah this is my favorite Christmas storm.  I remember doing some last minute shopping that morning and trying to get it done and back home before the storm hit.  I remember watching the rain/sleet start to change to snow out the window at Wendy's shortly after onset.  As soon as it changed to snow it was pure rippage all afternoon.  QCA ended up right under the pivot point, and IIRC we had around 7-8".

As far as the bolded (I'm sure michsnowfreak remembers), we saw that during the Superbowl snowstorm that busted big time.

Everyone was talking about how those were some of the biggest snowflakes they'd ever seen...

The Superbowl snowstorm was a big bust. 6-10" forecast, and extremely hyped....and we ended up with 1.9" at DTW & 3.6" here. I actually remember that it was a band of heavy snow after the storm departed that added a good inch to that total here. The main storm was basically a 2-3" snow for the heart of metro-Detroit.

Different results in the northern burbs as we got nearly 9" total from the suberbowl storm

Yes the superbowl storm perfomed well north of Detroit, but was still a huge bust here. Its funny...outside of GHD, where we STILL got 10" of snow, big snowstorms have been decidedly busting in the GOOD way not the bad way the last many years. The superbowl storm was one of probably 5 storms from the mid-1990s to mid-2000s where 6-12" was forecast and anywhere from T-4" is all that fell.

There have been a couple other bad busts too.

*That one in February of 2012 (I believe around the 20th?).

*That one from the 2007-2008 season which shall remain nameless.

*April 5-6, 2009 (at least in Wayne County, as we were under a Winter Storm Warning and forecasted to receive 6-10" here).

*That one in February of 2009 (I believe also around the 20th?).

I worded that wrong lol...I meant that the good busts have been outnumbering the bad busts...

*Feb 2012: The storm was 2-3" of slop, which mostly melted that day, but as I recall the writing was on the wall several days before

*F*** Jan 1, 2008, even though I still got 78.2" of snow that winter...and thank god for temps in the 60s 4 days later :)

*April 6, 2009 I got 4.6" but DTW had 7.2", which is actually a top 5 Apr storm for Detroit. What did you have?

*Feb 21, 2009 I got 3.4", DTW 3.0" (the 24-hour totals were 4.6" & 4.1" after u added in the LES post storm)

Of course, some busts stick out in your head more than others.

Most memorable bad busts for me...

I definitely didn't get 4" with April 5-6, 2009. I estimate that I got more like a sloppy 2" (I didn't take an exact measurement).

With the 2/21/2009 storm, I remember DTX expecting a quick 4-6" to fall that morning of the storm. Instead, most areas only saw ~3. With Feb. 2012, we were under a Winter Storm Warning for 6-10".

As far as your list of good busts, I agree with most of those (except 1/1/14 :P). I'd like to add:

*2/6/2008 (4-5" of snow in 2-3 hours)

*2/20/2014

*2/12/2008

*Feb 6, 2008...scenery was absolutely gorgeous with ice-laden trees coated in wet snow, but only about 2.5" here. Which still may have been a bit more than expected

*Feb 20, 2014...good point. That thundersnow added even MORE moisture to the incredible snowpack, and all the rain fell while it was cold. Despite the mild air & wind, after it all we still had a solid, frozen-block of 12" snowpack left (down from 21" four days in the 40s earlier)

*Feb 12, 2008...forgot about that one

One more bad bust: Jan 4, 2004. Expected 6-10", got 3.6"

Some of the busts we have been discussing were true busts were the models simply did not show that much snow falling (see Mar 5, 2008, Feb 5, 2011, & Feb 20, 2011) while others were a product of track shifts (see Minneapolis today).
