Davis Vantage Pro 2 issue

I just noticed that my weather station, a Davis Vantage Pro 2, is reading the humidity and dew point incorrectly. Both are ready very low. I checked with several different weather stations including my local airport only 5 miles away. The temp is the same but I am reading humidity at 42% when the airport is at 98%. My dew point is 41 while the airport is 64. Has anyone ever seen this problem and is there a fix? Thanks.

Mods, if this is the wrong place to ask, please move it accordingly. Thanks.

I suggest you contact the company and have them advise you as to the possibilities.  Hopefully it is something simple that they have seen before.

How long have you had it? Obviously very moist conditions there. This could be the issue...

"I had the same problem in Dec. 2010....and now again almost three years later.   Just getting off the phone with Davis Wx. Instruments very nice tech support,  they advised me that those of us unfortunate enough to live in very humid conditions  ( I live right on the Oregon coast )  will probably have to replace our outside humidity sensors every three years or so for this very reason.   The Davis proprietary sensor doesn't handle very moist conditions very well and over time will likely fail due to excessive wetness."

Thanks everyone, came home from work early today and everything has gone haywire. The temp outside is 158, dew point is 134 and barometer is down to 29.78. The only thing correct is the humidity at 56%. All of this is on the console. I am going to open up the humidity sensor and check for foreign materials, saw a lizard crawl in it just a bit ago, if not that, I will give the company a call. Thanks for all the replies. I have had this for about 4 or 5 years now.

EDIT: after taking it apart, nothing looks out of the ordinary except for the battery which has a 2008 date on it so that might be the cause. I will replace it tomorrow and hope for the best.

Could just be the sensor itself. I have the same unit and I had to replace mine after 5 years.

Update: After changing the battery and that not fixing it I finally got the tech rep from Davis and he asked if I got wind and rain readings and if the little symbol at the bottom right was blinking. I said yes to all and he said it was the sensor. So now I am off to find the lowest price on one. So far $112 seems to be the lowest.

Hmmm, i see $12 return shipping. I would think you could ship it for about $20-$30.

"I Just spoke to Davis re. refurbish/overhaul of VP2 Pro today.  Since my system has the 24-Hour Fan Aspirated Radiation Shield the overhaul cost is now $200.  I believe he said that a new motor gets installed and because there are a lot of parts in this subsystem, the complete overhaul cost has risen to $200.  As for calibration of sensors, I was told that all are check to make sure they are within the tolerances of new equipment."

After talking to the Davis tech and realizing that there would be a month of down time and the high shipping price to get it there, I decided to just replace the sensor, which I actually found a site that sells it for only $88.50, and the solar cover, which had a crack in it and moisture. They came in today and my station is now up and running.

Just got this email from Davis. I was surprised the tech never mentioned this.

Hello,

You can either send in just the temp/humidity sensor and we repair it for $ 58.00 which includes parts, labor and shipping back or we can send you an advanced replacement. You would swap out the sensor and send the faulty one back. The original charge to your credit card would be $ 197.00. This charge includes $ 50.00 for repair charge, $ 10.00 advanced shipping charge, $ 12.00 shipping and handling and the price of a temp/hum sensor which is $ 125.00. When we receive the old/faulty one back from you your credit card will be credited $ 125.00 so the ultimate charge will be $ 72.00. These prices are U.S. dollars and include shipping in the continental United States. To arrange for one of these please call us at 510-732-7814. Thank you

How old is the sensor?  Depending on the age, it looks pretty lame how expensive/tedious their charges are to fix or replace it imo.  I'm in the market for a good WX station, but I want it to last and not turn into a money pit.

Mine is about 4 to 5 years old. I have heard that if you live close to the coast, I live about 30 miles from the coast, or in the deep south, it will not last as long as if you lived in a less humid, less salty area. I guess I was lucky it lasted as long as it did.

For the money, you won't get a better station than a Davis.

Crap. My (purchased in June, under warranty) solid state drive in my new weather computer died overnight. Add to that the webcam that died a few weeks ago, and I have a few things to get fixed.

Even though I work with technology for a living... I hate it sometimes.

Weather station is still working though... (better knock on wood) :-)
