Isotherm
It's interesting that prior to 2002, there was actually a fairly strong inverse correlation between the October NAO modality and the ensuing winter DJF NAO modality. However, since 2002, that correlation has certainly weakened somewhat. Personally, I believe the decreased solar constant has had significant influence in dampening the inverse correlation such that negative NAO episodes have become more persistent / longer duration. Over recent years, the prevalence of October blocking has foretold a tendency for blocky winters, while on the other hand, examining the longer term data reveals an inverse pattern. Weathergun
Both the GEFS and Euro ensembles agree on the -NAO building into the Greenland/Davis Strait around Oct. 5:
Weathergun
The GEFS shows up to 552dm heights over parts of Greenland, next week. Although blocking is stronger closer to the north pole. Which is why we are seeing -AO tank so much on the charts. Still somewhat of fast flow on the Atlantic side:

Isotherm
Below is a 500mb composite of the 11 cases in which a < -0.75 October AO occurred, and their ensuing winters. 9/11 or 82% of those cases featured a -AO average for DJF. The glaring failures were 74-75 and 06-07 here. What's interesting is that this correlation does not really exist for > +0.75 AO Octobers as their ensuing winters featured mixed results. At this point in time, it's still early in the season, and generally when we examine -AO or +AO Octobers, there isn't much of a correlation when including the weakly positive or negative cases.
