Surprisingly large number of maples showing color out here.  Also too many are dropping leaves from the dry conditions.  My guess is that the early color in those trees is stress-induced as well.  Locally, I expect the color to disappoint this year.  Just way too dry this summer.  This wonderful stretch of weather would have resulted in great color had there been normal soil moisture.  South towards Skyline Drive, the SNP, and the GWF, however, it was a much wetter summer.  There, I bet the colors will be spectacular.

The higher elevations in  WV will likely be past peak that weekend. jonjon made a post yesterday in the obs thread stating that things were getting close out there in Davis and changing fast.

Thinking about doing a Fall Foliage Trip around the week of Oct 11th. Debating on where though, Western MD, VA, PA? Maybe WV?

This was Skyline Drive last yr on the 20th of Oct.. was prob still a bit before peak except highest elevations. From what I've seen regionally this year is a little behind last year.

Foliage Network shows almost no change so far but I'm sure it's missing highest elevations.

Photoguy - Not sure how far you're willing to drive, but some PA suggestions would be Ohiopyle State Park (north of Deep Creek,MD) and Ricketts Glen, which is NNE of Williamsport. Both are about 3.5 hours from your area and both locations have great waterfalls....especially Ricketts Glen.  I'm not really sure about VA outside of Skyline Drive.

Thanks, I am thinking about staying out towards Deep Creek way and travelling to other spots from there in MD/PA/WV.

Ohiopyle looks like a great spot. I might check out Coopers Rock in WV which is about 45 mins from Deep Creek. Coopers Rock is beautiful in summer.

And Coopers Rock should peak later than the Blackwater Falls/Sods area, so that weekend of the 11th should be ok there. Ohiopyle shouldn't be much more than an hour or so from Deep Creek and you could always add in Falling Water. With color on the leaves, pics of Falling Water would be pretty sweet.

Colors will be real nice up here this weekend.  Sorry for the crappy phone pic at dusk, really doesn't do it justice.

I drove through Garrett Co. yesterday. The colors in the high ground west of Frostburg were magnificent. Driving, so I didn't grab any pictures, but may head back with the family this weekend.

The attached picture was taken by official COOP observer Dave Lesher who runs the Davis 3SSE WV station on Friday, September 26, 2014. The elevations in the picture collage PDF are above 3500 feet just north of Canaan Valley WV up on Canaan Mtn. It is "leaf-peeper" weekend up there in the mountain area around Canaan Valley WV, and it looks like the colors won't disappoint all the leaf peepers who come to check them out.  Enjoy! Canaan Mtn. Drove up 220 to Monterey, then 250 out to Elkins yesterday, can definitely verify WinterWxLuvr's pics, above 3000 ft will likely peak this week in Highland, Pocahontas, Randolph counties. Colors are really good, especially the reds! Valleys (I was surprised at lack of color in Elkins, looked like here in Covington, about 30% of trees in a change mode, nowhere near full color) running a good 10-14 days behind, IMO.

Found this pic over on FMs site. Looks like peak will hit at Blackwater Falls this week.

We are actually about a week past peak here at 3000' and above.  Although when you look down at the lower elevations (such as those photos at Lindy point looking into the canyon), the colors are still nice and may have a little ways to go.

Thanks, jonjon. Will be out there later in the week and was counting on the canyon and other lower elevations to still be good. Always forget how fast you can gain elevation out there in a short distance.
