Indianapolis going to keep the 2014 theme of having a late temperature threshold, though this one will be of the "warm" variety. Still haven't hit 32˚ at IND this Fall...and it doesn't look to happen anytime soon.

Median date of first 32˚ temperature

Longterm (1871-2013): October 23

City sites (1871-1942): October 26

Airport sites (1943-2013): October 19

30 year normal (1981-2010): October 18

Last 30 years (1984-2013): October 18

Earliest: September 30, 1899 and 1993

Latest: November 27, 1902

Last year: October 22, 2013

34 times the first 32˚ reading happened in November.

Current forecasted high for IND on Monday is 77˚. So, how many times has Indianapolis had a temperature of 77˚ or higher in the last 7 days of October (10/25-31)?

48 times, since 1871. The highest being 83˚ back on October 27, 1940. Seven of the days on this last happened on Halloween.

1927 was one day shy of having all seven days hit 77˚+. Couldn't pull it off on 10/31 though, when the high temp only reached a still warm 74˚.

The last time IND had a temp of 77˚+ in the Oct 25-31 timeframe was 10/29/2004. And 10/28/1999 was the last 80˚+ day.

Longterm that comes out to about once every 3 years, though they often seem to come in bunches as your graphic shows.

I guess if things do get kinda crazy this month...here's the top 20 coldest Novembers for Evansville, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, and South Bend.

For reference, last November's mean average temperature and historical rank:

EVV: in chart above

FWA: 38.1˚ (24th coldest)

IND: 39.2˚ (tied for 23rd coldest)

SBN: 38.4˚ (32nd coldest)

Inspired by Josh's stats for Detroit...here's the top 30 coldest and warmest Novembers for Indianapolis...and each month's total snowfall.

Not typically a snowy month to begin with for Indianapolis, but having a pretty cold November helps to an extent. Average of the 30 coldest months is 2.2", where as the 30 warmest months is 1.1".

16 of the 30 coldest and 9 of the 30 warmest had above average snowfall. Note that 2 of the top 3 warmest had above average snowfall...so sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.

I guess we'll call this the race for a top 10 coldest November for Indianapolis.

The numbers below are split into 10 day mean average temperature "chunks".....November 1-10, 11-20, and 21-30....for each year. Last column would be the final monthly value with the departure in ( ). Departures are versus the longterm city and airport averages, depending on where the climo site was located for each respective year.

Only three years below had a "warmer" first 10 days of November, than 2014. So, the last 20 days of this month better do some damage. Probably not gonna happen for this year's edition, breaking into the top 10, despite a current cold look in the near/medium range...but we'll follow the progress anyways.

2014: 43.9˚.....?.....? = ?

1880: 47.3˚.....26.4˚.....19.6˚ = 31.1˚ (-11.2˚)

1976: 38.2˚.....34.5˚.....31.3˚ = 34.6˚ (-8.0˚)

1959: 41.8˚.....32.3˚.....32.5˚ = 35.5˚ (-7.1˚)

1872: 45.7˚.....32.1˚.....28.7˚ = 35.5˚ (-6.8˚)

1951: 30.3˚.....38.5˚.....37.9˚ = 35.6˚ (-7.0˚)

1950: 45.7˚.....40.6˚.....22.9˚ = 36.4˚ (-6.2˚)

1911: 42.9˚.....36.0˚.....31.8˚ = 36.9˚ (-5.4˚)

1873: 43.0˚.....33.7˚.....33.9˚ = 36.9˚ (-5.4˚)

1995: 38.7˚.....36.6˚.....35.7˚ = 37.0˚ (-5.6˚)

1996: 41.6˚.....34.4˚.....35.7˚ = 37.2˚ (-5.4˚)
