huronicane
Over 400,000 customers are without power in Michigan right now. That's one of the highest totals I can ever remember. Not sure where that ranks in history but I can only remember a few times where there were more outages. The derechoes of 1991, 1995 and 1998 come to mind. Come to think of it, the 90's were a crazy decade for Derechoes in this area. Edit: There's over 300,000 customers with outages just in SEMI alone according to DTE. 129,000 in Wayne/Oakland/Macomb. Apparently it's still rising as more reports come in. May 31, 1998 derecho had 800k across the state. I am trying to find some totals for the July 2, 1997, outbreak. I imagine that would be pretty high. We were without power for several days.

Geos
Outages in NE IL are coming down. Cook still has better than 67,000 customers still in the dark. https://www.comed.com/_layouts/comedsp/OutageMap.aspx Sounds like a wild evening in southern MI. One of the things that sticks in my mind most from July 2 was seeing a birch tree where the bark was peeled upward in a helix. The thing I remember most was seeing huge sections of bricks blown off the sides of the businesses in my neighborhood. Still have never seen anything quite like that again, plus the warning that DTX issued was the only time I've ever seen them advertising winds in excess of 100 MPH. http://www.crh.noaa.gov/images/dtx/events/tordtx_4.txt Back on topic, DTE is reporting over 400,000 customers without power now in SEMI alone. About to surpass 500,000 statewide.

Stebo
Looks like there is around 350k are without power in SEMI, the line was pretty bad just East of where I live as there are many outages in St Clair Shores. Up where I was it was rocking pretty good though, I would say gusts around 60 to 65 with continuous lightning.

Chicago WX
1.15" total at LAF from last night through this morning. Peak wind gust of 48 mph with the storms. Airport has been on the low side of rainfall locally total-wise, but since August 16...14 out of the last 22 days have had measurable rainfall there (17 of 22 with a trace or more). wisconsinwx
With it being a near lock that we won't see a 90 degree day this year, three of the past seven years will have seen 0 or 1 90 degree highs. Considering we had an impressive three year streak of hot summers in that period as well, the last seven years have been a veritable rollercoaster of summer patterns. Boogieman
Gorgeous cirrus with a deep, crystal clear, blue sky...every door and window open for the next few days Yes!!! I've had to have the AC on until this morning. This past month I've had to run it not so much because of the heat, but rather due to the high humidity levels. I have rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalsia, both of which go nuts under certain weather conditions. Humidity seems to make the fibro flare up really bad, especially the nocturnal peaks. I spend several weeks each summer at my father in law's cottage at Sandy Pines... I don't know what his aversion to open windows is, but it's like he'd rather fry and sweat rather than open some windows. This year his AC hasn't been working too well, so we've sparred over that while we were up there staining his decking. At least he keeps a few of those large tower fans around. My favorite item in the summer is my ancient metal 24" window fan. I'll put it down in the lower level, blowing out, and open the windows upstairs. Boogieman
I was looking at a post from DTX on facebook... there were some really impressive rainfall amounts from yesterday's storms. Were there any more flooding issues around Detroit metro? I've seen a few reports in the 4 inch plus range.

Powerball
So overall, just to recap, the real story with yesterday's storms were the winds. By far, last night's storms produced the worst widespread damaging winds of any severe weather event for 2014 in/around Detroit. It did however lack the torrential downpours, frequent claps of thunder, flash flooding and even hail events that several other events produced. Quite frankly, for what was at first a very anti-climatic start, this season is certainly going out with a bang. I would even say this season alone has ultimately delivered more extreme severe weather events to Detroit than any season in the past several years (including 2010-2012). Powerball
Also, yesterday easily felt like the hottest day of the year, with several hours of heat indices around 100*F. It was also the first morning this entire Summer in which it felt legitimately hot during the morning hours and you knew the day was going to turn into a scorcher. The official high at KDET was 94*F.
