It's been above 90ºF at KDET for over six consecutive hours now. Also impressively, the heat index has been 95ºF+ for seven hours and 100ºF+ for three. Putting that into consideration, probably the "hottest" day of the year so far and it's in September.

Slightly less impressively in the 'burbs at DTW, you can shave an hour off of each streak.

KDET always torches on days like this with the strong WSW flow (downsloping). For a second, I wondered if DTX would go with a heat advisory, given this was the hottest day of the year and the fact that IWX went with a heat advisory...

BTW, clouds are moving in/billowing here, as a new line of storms try to get going ahead of those around Jackson/Lansing.

I'm hearing some distant thunder just southwest of you where I am. Getting really dark out here too and the radar is looking juicier now to the west.

There's a small void in the lightning right now between Novi and Ypsilanti.

Hopefully it can fill in a bit better sooner...

Complete mess here to the north of ORD this afternoon. Tree branches, from 2" - 8" down on nearly every street. Full trees actually snapped at the base half a mile west of me.

Today was recycling day, so the bins were flung across the street and onto driveways. Some folks hadn't had their pick-up yet when the storms hit- all sorts of stuff on their lawns.

Happened to be driving when the storms hit, visibility probably around 35 feet at the peak. Only took about 5 minutes for the streets to get overwhelmed, ditches across my neighborhood filled with water.

All in all, quality event. Can still hear the saws going, dismantling the downed branches and trees.

Over 400,000 customers are without power in Michigan right now. That's one of the highest totals I can ever remember.

Not sure where that ranks in history but I can only remember a few times where there were more outages. The derechoes of 1991, 1995 and 1998 come to mind. Come to think of it, the 90's were a crazy decade for Derechoes in this area.

Edit: There's over 300,000 customers with outages just in SEMI alone according to DTE. 129,000 in Wayne/Oakland/Macomb. Apparently it's still rising as more reports come in.
