This is under Vatnajokull glacier so eruption would cause a Jokalhaup flood, and would initially be explosive. http://en.vedur.is/about-imo/news/nr/2938 Seismic activity at Bárðarbunga persists 18.8.2014 The intense seismic activity that started on 16 of August at Bárðarbunga persists. Very strong indications of ongoing magma movement, in connection with dyke intrusion, is corroborated by GPS measurements. There are currently two swarms: one to the E of Bárðarbunga caldera and one at the edge of Dyngjujökull just E of Kistufell. At 2.37 am on the 18th a strong earthquake (M4) was located in the Kistufell swarm. This is the strongest earthquake measured in the region since 1996. As evidence of magma movement shallower than 10 km implies increased potential of a volcanic eruption, the Bárðarbunga aviation color code has been changed to orange. Presently there are no signs of eruption, but it cannot be excluded that the current activity will result in an explosive subglacial eruption, leading to an outburst flood (jökulhlaup) and ash emission. The overwhelming,ing majority of Icelandic eruptions have no climate impact, of course. Most likely is a sub glacial fissure eruption on a small scale. An reconnaissance flight by the Icelandic Coast Guard detected an ongoing lava eruption under the Dyngjujökull glacier using radar data. So far, the eruption seems to be small and has not breached the glacier's 150-400 m thick ice. No signs were seen at its surface during the flight. The aviation color code for the Bárðarbunga volcano has been raised to red. Some minutes ago (14:04 local time), one of the largest quakes, estimated magnitude 4.5 occurred. The aviation color code for the Bárðarbunga volcano remains red as an imminent eruption can not be excluded. Additional recon scheduled for tomorrow. Update: No Changes to Cauldrons in Glacier 3D map of earthquake / magma movement. Is that a small layer of Ash on Cam3? According to the NHC projected track of Cristobal, I'd imagine we could be looking at a pretty nasty cocktail from mother nature if the two events coincide.
