Derecho!
Intense earthquake swarm for a couple of days, harmonic tremor has started. This is under Vatnajokull glacier so eruption would cause a Jokalhaup flood, and would initially be explosive. http://en.vedur.is/about-imo/news/nr/2938 Seismic activity at Bárðarbunga persists 18.8.2014 The intense seismic activity that started on 16 of August at Bárðarbunga persists. Very strong indications of ongoing magma movement, in connection with dyke intrusion, is corroborated by GPS measurements. There are currently two swarms: one to the E of Bárðarbunga caldera and one at the edge of Dyngjujökull just E of Kistufell. At 2.37 am on the 18th a strong earthquake (M4) was located in the Kistufell swarm. This is the strongest earthquake measured in the region since 1996. As evidence of magma movement shallower than 10 km implies increased potential of a volcanic eruption, the Bárðarbunga aviation color code has been changed to orange. Presently there are no signs of eruption, but it cannot be excluded that the current activity will result in an explosive subglacial eruption, leading to an outburst flood (jökulhlaup) and ash emission. The situation is monitored closely.

downeastnc
http://www.volcanodiscovery.com/bardabunga.html "Bárdarbunga, a large central volcano, had its last major eruption in 1477 when it produced a large ash and pumice fall-out deposit. It also produced the largest known lava flow during the past 10,000 years on earth (more than 21 cubic kilometers of volume" List of eruption below notice that it usually has frequent smaller eruptions but has been quiet for a extended period of time longer in fact than in the last 300-400 years not that that implies this one will be a bigger one but it is interesting to note 1159(?), ca. 1210, ca. 1270, ca. 1350, ca. 1410(?), 1477 (very large effusive-explosive eruption), 1697, 1702, 1706, 1712, 1716, 1717, 1720, 1726, 1729, 1739, 1750, 1766, 1769, 1797, 1807(?), 1862-64, 1872(?), 1902-03 New webcam watching the area http://vedur2.mogt.is/grimsfjall/webcam/
Derecho!
The seismicity actually isn't at Bardarbunga itself - it's NE of it, and has been progressing away. Really it's in a no-man's land where there isn't a known volcano. If anything it's getting closer to Kverkfjoll volcano.

Derecho!
What kind of potential eruption are week looking at here impact wise on the NH weather if any? The overwhelming, ing majority of Icelandic eruptions have no climate impact, of course. Most likely is a sub glacial fissure eruption on a small scale. Jim Marusak
question here. what model or models did the best for forecasting ash plumes' movement and dissipation when the last Icelandic volcanoes blew up with all that ash a couple of years ago? just curious for if and when this particular volcano decides to finally let go. thanks. Ottawa Blizzard
Have to admit I'm really hoping this volcano does not erupt as I have a flight to Europe planned for September 29, and my Mom is flying to the UK on Monday night.
Jonbo
Upgraded to Red alert The eruption has started today under the Vatnajökull glacier, the Icelandic Met Office wrote in a brief update. An reconnaissance flight by the Icelandic Coast Guard detected an ongoing lava eruption under the Dyngjujökull glacier using radar data. So far, the eruption seems to be small and has not breached the glacier's 150-400 m thick ice. No signs were seen at its surface during the flight. The aviation color code for the Bárðarbunga volcano has been raised to red. Some minutes ago (14:04 local time), one of the largest quakes, estimated magnitude 4.5 occurred. More information is expected to be published later today. http://www.volcanodiscovery.com/bardarbunga/news/47027/Brdarbunga-volcano-update-Eruption-has-started-under-ice-cap.html

SN_Lover
UPDATE: WarningPresently there are no signs of ongoing volcanic activity. The aviation color code for the Bárðarbunga volcano remains red as an imminent eruption can not be excluded. RED: Eruption is imminent or in progress - significant emission of ash into atmosphere likely.

Kelathos
Uncertain what is happening in Vatnajökull Scientists flew over and observed some changes in the ice. Additional recon scheduled for tomorrow. Update: No Changes to Cauldrons in Glacier 3D map of earthquake / magma movement. Is that a small layer of Ash on Cam3? mikemost
Not sure if anybody has brought this up yet.
