Tweet from the National Weather Service CLE.  My parents have gotten 4.8" today. I can not remember any day when my parents' house got over 3.6". I assume some roads are flooded.

Even by 10:00am Eastern, the radar showed 1-3" had fallen near Toledo.

EDIT: Lowballed original numbers because I not know math good. oops.

DTW already blew away the daily record of 2.06" for August 11: at 3.05" and counting as of 6:14pm by my account. 3" is the average August precip total! Entire monthly average just fell in about 8 hours.

Significant flooding occurring throughout Metro Detroit right now.

Widespread amounts of 2-4" reported, and the rain continues to come down...

The I-94/I-75 freeway exchange is closed, as it's completely submerged in water.

I hope this can run off some tonight else it will be a long drive home via the surface streets.

Make that 4.27" on the day with 1.66" in the last hour.

OMG...It has been pouring all day and the overcast has been as dark as November. Even the radar resembles a fall-like storm. But I didnt realize THAT much rain had fallen (maybe a little less imby?) This will probably be Detroits wettest calendar day on record.

Okay, up to 4.29" on the day at DTW now as of 6:38PM. Making a run for 8/17/1926 (4.51") for wettest August day ever. Wettest day ever appears to be 4.74" on 7/31/1925.

:flood:

Honestly if anything redevelops both of these are in jeopardy, as it stands I think they might still be as it is still rain here albeit much lighter.

New daily record for August and just 0.19" away from the all-time daily record. 150% of monthly average precip in 9 hours. Just wow.

We have added 0.02" since the hourly, if the stuff out near Ann Arbor is able to roll through here, we should be able to achieve our record.

Nah, it's fading fast to just a light shower here. That said, still about 5 hours left for something to redevelop. 2nd wettest day in 140ish years ain't bad though.

Synoptic, fall-like forcing in summer atmosphere FTW. I'll have to check later but I'll bet 7/31/1925 had a similar setup given that day also set a low max of 64.

:flood: 5.35" of rain and it's still absolutely pouring. This is by far the most rain I've ever measured before in a single day.

Word of advice, check your basement if you have one, even if it has never flooded before. The runoff is going to be just tremendous and may not be felt in full effects for a few hours yet.

This is close to I think it was 7/28 and 7/29/2011 in Washtenaw county (albeit that was over a longer timespan) and I think a lot of people got unpleasant basement surprises associated with that one around here.

I did check my basement actually. There's a small amount of water leaking in. First time I've ever seen that before and I've lived here for 20 years this month.

IWX, those radar estimates are definitely lowballs. KDTX consistently underestimates and attenuates heavy precip. Radar estimates <3" at KDTW and they're at 4.5"+ there.

Those areas around the west side of Detroit and Dearborn probably have seen over 6" of rain truth be told.

There is some major urban flooding going on in the area. My brother (for some reason) just thought it would be a good idea to go to the gym and he had to turn around and come back because so many roads were impassible. Especially out around Ford Road in Dearborn. It is very tough to get in or out of the city right now.
