NEG NAO
To show how rare Hurricane landfalls are in NJ click on the NJ link from that article - only 2 , 1903 storm and Sandy in 2012 this is why Sandy was called a 1 in a 100 year storm in NJ http://www.hurricanes-blizzards-noreasters.com/newjersey.html
uncle W
Belle is an under rated hurricane in this area... 24 years ago on this date in 1990 the area picked up over 4" of rain and an f0 tornado hit Grant City Staten Island...it came ashore as a water spout and did damage to a few blocks... stormwarn
Wow, the years go by. I remember Belle as if it were yesterday. Picked up almost 4" of rain here in northern NJ with winds about 50mph. David in 79' was much more impressive.
Wannabehippie
My entire family was in Florida visiting my grandparents when Belle hit. We came home to find a large cherry tree in our front yard had been knocked down during the storm. It fell towards the street. If it had fell instead towards our driveway, our car would have been crushed by it.
JBG
My memory of Belle was listening to news reports that the one or two fatalities from the storm was a couple that decided to take a stroll on the beach at the height of the storm. Candidates for the Darwin Award.
