ORH_wxman
Not anymore. As of last year, most of it has been upgraded to a smooth-as-silk, well-paved and well-marked highway (Daniel Inouye highway). Speed limit is 55 mph almost the entire stretch. It's an easy cruise in good conditions. We were in Hawaii this past April, and it was a great ride. Only the first few miles out of Hilo were a bit hairy, but then it opened up into a big easy cruise. I've got to imagine some amazing rainfall ocurred though on the southeast facing slopes...the terrain there is just about perfect for upslope SE wind. phil882
Very interesting evolution with Iselle.... after decoupling last night prior to landfall, it appears some frictional convergence allowed for one last resurgence in organization prior to landfall. This llc that made landfall actually also coexisted with a lee cyclone that formed east of the big island before Iselle's landfall. Now the original llc has been destroyed, but the lee cyclone is now considered the closed circulation of Iselle. While this will likely translate into a large jump in the track of Iselle, its really a new llc rather than the same circulation that was being tracked on radar last night. Thank you very much for explaining this. That's a nice analysis of a complex situation that don't think I've ever seen until now.
Srain
Julio continues to churn WNW and is forecast to slowing weaken. The latest track guidance suggests it will pass safely N of the Island Chain.
Sickman
Probably one of the most impressive tropical cyclone shreddings I've seen since David vs. Hispanola in '79.
Wannabehippie
Probably one of the most impressive tropical cyclone shreddings I've seen since David vs. Hispanola in '79. Not a real big surprise, given the high of the volcanic peaks in Hawaii. Not really rugged, but very high up there. David did a big regeneration after it hit hispanola. and luckily for Hawaii this was 'just' a strong tropical storm and not a cat 5 hurricane like David was. I do not think this storm will regenerate, and now will just dissipate over the mid pacific.
