jm1220
I remember the 10.87". It was at Lido Beach. Every single street in town was flooded from that rain event and tons of basements flooded, and it was a week before Irene.
Weathergun
I believe Islip's previous record was from Bob in August of 1991, they had something like 6 inches in 2 hours Islip had 9.71" between 5am and 7am this morning. Also OKX now says all-time monthly record for ISP is 14.07" back in October 2005.
Allsnow
I wonder if ISP could even past the new record with a tropical/remnants of one
Stormlover74
I slept through this whole event. I worked 28 hours straight before coming home at 5pm last night and then went to bed at 8:30 and just got up lol This should be in banter...but I can't believe anyone could work for 28 hours straight let alone someone who carries a gun
danstorm
I wonder where the 9.71" ranks for 2 hour rainfall totals. Wouldn't be at all surprised if it was the most on record in our region.

Yanksfan
Now imagine if it was January and it fell as snow!! 9 feet in 2 hours!! It would be the ultimate heartbreak with us jersey folks. I'd be measuring the snow with a 12 inch ruler, while long island would be using a tape measure! Using Henry M's 25-40:1 ratios he employs with every storm, Islip might have had 50 feet on the ground by now. So those airport observers would need an awfully long tape measure. Dsnowx53
I've only found five MONTHS since 1869 in Central Park that had more rain than Islip during this event.
LocoAko
Haven't read the entire thread so forgive me if this has alrwasy been shared, but this morning's event is a great example of the benefits of dual-pol for quantitative precipitation estimation. I've attached the dual-pol storm total (red/yellow pixels are 14-16") as well as the difference between dual-pol and the legacy QPE product. The dual-pol estimates are 5-7" higher in spots which is obviously significant and seem much more in line with observations. Goes to show what can happen when your Z-R relation and drop size distributions differ significantly from the typical relations and values. Great stuff for an incredible meteorological event. Wxnyc
Tannersville is in a good spot for precip on the eastern slopes of the Catskills at around 1900 feet a.s.l. The catskills didn't actually get much from this storm I'm near liberty ny at 1,550 ft and measured .65 in from the whole storm. The western catskills usually do very well with upslope southeast winds but not this time.

NYC Weather Lover
Wow this is incredible stuff I'm hearing about. I'm just glad it wasn't further west. I agree. If rain like what Islip had (13 inches) was in NJ with all the rivers, we'd have a true disaster.

bluewave
Wow-someone around Brentwood might have received 15 inches. These totals are pretty much off the charts for this part of the country. While I don't have the NY county daily rainfall data, the nearby NJ information indicates this was easily in excess of a 100 year 24 hr rainfall. nzucker
It's part of the job. Anyway, just found out that I only received near an inch of rain. No wonder the cops are shooting random people and resorting to chokeholds. I might, too, after 28 hours of work. Definitely not safe for a person with that power to work so long. Anyway, just missed the heavy rains to the north here in Westchester. HPN/White Plains only had 0.85"...

patrick05
took me 4 hours to get to work (30 mins usually); worse than the surprise 6 inches of snow from earlier this year that shut down Suffolk County. Connetquot River was still overflowing when i passed by at 12pm. And Southern State definitely smelled like water. Mud and cars were all over the place. Must suck if they were caught in that water.
