Tannersville is in a good spot for precip on the eastern slopes of the Catskills at around 1900 feet a.s.l.

It would be the ultimate heartbreak with us jersey folks. I'd be measuring the snow with a 12 inch ruler, while long island would be using a tape measure!  :violin:

Using Henry M's 25-40:1 ratios he employs with every storm, Islip might have had 50 feet on the ground by now. So those airport observers would need an awfully long tape measure.

Haven't read the entire thread so forgive me if this has alrwasy been shared, but this morning's event is a great example of the benefits of dual-pol for quantitative precipitation estimation. I've attached the dual-pol storm total (red/yellow pixels are 14-16") as well as the difference between dual-pol and the legacy QPE product. The dual-pol estimates are 5-7" higher in spots which is obviously significant and seem much more in line with observations. Goes to show what can happen when your Z-R relation and drop size distributions differ significantly from the typical relations and values. Great stuff for an incredible meteorological event.

The catskills didn't actually get much from this storm I'm near liberty ny at 1,550 ft and measured .65 in from the whole storm. The western catskills usually do very well with upslope southeast winds but not this time.

Wow-someone around Brentwood might have received 15 inches.

These totals are pretty much off the charts for this part of the country. While I don't have the NY county

daily rainfall data, the nearby NJ information indicates this was easily in excess of a 100 year 24 hr rainfall.

It's part of the job. Anyway, just found out that I only received near an inch of rain.

No wonder the cops are shooting random people and resorting to chokeholds.

I might, too, after 28 hours of work. Definitely not safe for a person with that power to work so long.

Anyway, just missed the heavy rains to the north here in Westchester. HPN/White Plains only had 0.85"...

Even more impressive was the short duration. Storms like Floyd, Irene and the noreasters in 2007/2010 all dumped these amounts in 12-24 hours not under 6

I don't know if anyone had posted this so forgive me if they have, but these are truly incredible rain totals overnight in Islip. 2 hourly totals of 5.34 at 5:56AM and 4.37 at 6:56AM. Along with 6hour totals at 7:56AM of 12.92" and 24 hour totals of 13.10".

Honestly the brunt of the rains came in about 2-3 hours time. Truly incredible stuff when you really think about it. +

took me 4 hours to get to work (30 mins usually); worse than the surprise 6 inches of snow from earlier this year that shut down Suffolk County.

Connetquot River was still overflowing when i passed by at 12pm. And Southern State definitely smelled like water. Mud and cars were all over the place. Must suck if they were caught in that water.

We've been discussing it for several pages ... it's one of the most impressive weather stats I've seen in all my time living in the Tri State.
