Went under a surprise tornado warning today as a tornado was spotted northwest of here with storms that blew up well ahead of the activity in Michigan. The storm was nearly stationary just north of Waterloo, and a second nearly stationary line of storms was to my immediate south. Made for an awesome afternoon of rolling thunder CG show. Saw that looked like a pin needle funnel last 3 minutes before the tornado warning was issued.

Aside from pea size hail and some heavy rain, nothing else has been reported in the area.

Six Environment Canada warning regions were placed under tornado warnings which resulted in the map looking like this...(locations in the path of the two tornadoes were never specified in the warnings)

As you can imagine, this creates a lot of confusion, but nothing is ever done about it. Also note EC kept us under a severe thunderstorm warning in Waterloo Region for 3 hours and 6 minutes.

lol EC

It was a perplexing situation. My tornado warned storm extended about 30km from where the tornado was reported to here. NWS radar is crap out this way, and EC radar is junk even on radarscope. EC didn't specify any info other than a tornado was reported near Millbank, so I was at a loss as to what was going on. News was on the 6pm locals, but they all they did was briefly recite the warning text. There was no information being passed around. Just another day in Ontario. Luckily nothing happened out this way, but I kept an eagle eye on the sky for sure.

Something will happen eventually, it's only a matter of time.

The 2009 event was a drop in the bucket compared to what could happen should a violent tornado (ala Barrie 1985) go through a city in S ON with poor warning like that.
