stormwarn
I remember this. I measured 2.06" for that day, much of it falling within an hours time. It was the start of a horrid heat wave, 9 days in 90+ degrees. I reached 97F on the 25th and again on the 27th of that year. Thanks for sharing. Stormlover74
I don't remember this event as it looks like the storms split the region. Based on the radar in the grainy video it looks like the cell came down through NE NJ and blew up over LI

IsentropicLift
I wonder if this is the same storm system where I experienced my first time ever being under a tornado warning. I remember watching the weather channel and being scared.

Stormlover74
This site is pretty cool...not sure how accurate it is but you put in any date and it shows you where tornadoes occurred, paths etc. http://www.tornadohistoryproject.com/tornado/1998/9/7/map

There was a microburst and 60+ mph wind just east of my town.
WE GOT HIM
Does anyone remember a storm that occurred on a very windy summer day in the 90s? (This could have been it) I remember a tent my parents had literally flying away earlier in the day, then later on, clouds raced across the sky faster than anything I have ever seen. (I remember it going from sunny to a pitch black sky in a minute or two, I think the clouds went from south to north) I also remember the radio weather report saying there could be gusts up to 100 mp/h I always wanted to know the date of this. Stormlover74
Here's a link to the 7/18/97 event http://www.angelfire.com/pa/pawx/071897/071897.html Damage in NJ--Bergen, Union, Essex, and Hudson counties: Lightning struck a house in Hillsdale, setting it on fire. Severe thunderstorm winds were responsible for two deaths and 2 injuries in these areas. A 20 year-old male parking attendant at the Ridgefield Country Club in Paramus was struck and killed by a flying tree branch. The severe thunderstorm responsible for this death picked up a lot of other debris and sent it flying through the air. Remember, NEVER STAY OUTSIDE DURING A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM!! In Mahwah, a person was killed by a tree that fell during a severe thunderstorm, and in Newark, 2 people were injured by a falling tree, where a 59 mph thunderstorm gust was recorded. Trees and branches were downed at several other areas in northeast New Jersey, including in Jersey City. Some of these trees fell onto and through houses and vehicles. Here are some peak wind gusts recorded in Union county: Kenilworth - 60 mph Mountainside - 66 mph Garwood - 72 mph Roselle - 70 mph Damage on Long Island, NY--Severe thunderstorms moved through the area twice; in the early afternoon, and in the evening. In Brooklyn, a circus tent collapsed, resulting in three injuries. A few trees were down by the downburst winds, and one fell on a woman, injuring her. She suffered cuts, bruises, and a broken leg. Also, lightning struck two-story building, resulting in a significant fire, which killed 1 person and injured two. Pea size hail accompianied this thunderstorm in Brooklyn too. In Queens, 2 male workers were thrown off of a scaffolding and killed by thunderstorm winds in Sunnyside. As the scaffolding collapsed, the remaining two men on it were injured. Also in Queens, a large tent collapsed, injuring 16 people. It is very fortunate nobody was killed there. Moving onto Nassau county, EOC (Emergency Operations Center) officials reported that certain places in Sea Cliff, Sands Point, and Elmont received significant wind damage from thunderstorms (more detailed info may come soon). In Merrick and Mineola, a 57 mph thunderstorm wind gust was recorded, with tree limbs down and power out. In Baldwin, trees were downed, and large limbs were ripped off others. In Suffolk county, Deer Park was hit the hardest. Apparently, a microburst struck with the passage of the severe thunderstorm. K-Lombardi repair shop and another business had their roofs ripped off. Also, the top layer of a factory plant roof was peeled off, with the debris landing nearly 1,000 feet away, some on cars. The garage door and windows were blown into the factory as well. Between these three businesses, 12 people were injured. Dime size hail also fell in a section of Deer Park, while quarter size hail fell in Babylon. A 60 mph thunderstorm gust was measured at both Brookhaven and Farmingdale, while thunderstorm winds were clocked at 58 mph in Bohemia. At the National Weather Service Office in Upton, a tree snapped in half in their parking lot. It landed 10 feet away from the MIC's (Meteorologist-In-Charge) car! Rjay
There was a storm some time between 1988 and 1993 that really helped make me into the weather enthusiast I am today. There was tons of rotation. To me it seemed like everything was rotating and the world was about to end. We got hail and strong winds in Merrick. It sucks that I have no idea what year it even was in. IntenseBlizzard2014
This was the first funnel cloud I experienced up close. I was 3 at the time. It was pretty scary, but it made me the weather enthusiast I am today.

There was tons of rotation. To me it seemed like everything was rotating and the world was about to end. We got hail and strong winds in Merrick. It sucks that I have no idea what year it even was in. Was it in the early evening? I recall a very nasty event in late July early August 1992 the night Flushing Meadows park supposedly had a tornado touchdown briefly...that same evening there was a tornado warning for Nassau county and it was mainly the southeast portion of it that was at risk. The sky was as green as I can ever remember seeing it for a severe weather event when I was in Queens around 730-8pm. It was one of only 2 severe events during that 1992 summer, 8/11/92 was the other one.
