These events are known as hybrid derechos. For example, the "Southern Great Lakes Derecho of May 30-31, 1998 was attendant to a strong, migrating low pressure system. When you consider that this was 1980, pretty impressive to have this many significant wind reports. Many events nowadays don't have so many reports even with more spotters and overall reporting.
