Big Jims Videos
The jersey shore so far this summer has been great for sun worshipers but awful for swimming. Was down in aabury park and Belmar earlier this week and I doubt the water broke 60 degrees each day. Where's all the warm water at?

Was down in aabury park and Belmar earlier this week and I doubt the water broke 60 degrees each day. Where's all the warm water at? All the SW winds recently have been causing a ton of upwelling. Same deal on li it's been super chilly for the time of year!
IntenseBlizzard2014
Just off the New Haven, Connecticut is far colder. It's 50F.

Weathergun
I highly doubt the water is 50F in July. New Haven station reported water temps lower 70s this week: http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=nwhc3 It worse, though further down the NJ shore. Atlantic City station reported water temps in upper 50s earlier in the week: http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=acyn4

On Tuesday at Asbury park your foot went numb in about 10 seconds of standing in the water. Atlantic city's temps were 59 yesterday. Belmar was no better on Sunday. Hopefully this can change for this weekend

Brian5671
I was in Ocean City, NJ last week of June and it was really warm to start, near 70 and then dropped some, but agree-the winds often push the warm water offshore and cause upwelling especially around this time of year when it's hottest
Isotherm
Who cares about the temp, I wouldn't go more than 10 feet into an ocean where you can't see worth a damn. Our ocean is dark, dirty, murky, and ugly. Plus, I value my life too much to risk getting my legs amputated from a shark attack.

bluewave
I think the cold water comments are coming from the fact that many locations are running around 5 degrees cooler than during this week last July. http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/dsdt/cwtg/catl.html

AvantHiatus
Onshore flow here today have pushed local sea surface temperatures back into the lower to mid 70's. Hurricane Arthur and the persistent cold fronts have allowed us to avoid extremely above average temps.

TWCCraig
The cold water temps were a result of Arthur's upwelling as it passed to the SE a little over a weak ago. If it wasn't for Arthur most places would be at least in the low 70's. Ocean temps area wide dropped into the lower 60's/upper 50's the day after Arthur. They have rebounded a bit since then but still running cooler than normal.
Northwest NJ
I was in Ocean City Maryland last week and all anyone could talk about was how cold the water was. I was thinking it might have been a combination of the cold winter and some upwelling from Arthur.
