Man Tigers are playing and there are some legit CG all over the place just south of the stadium.

Wow, didn't know those showers had grown into t'storms.

I'm not hearing any type of thunder or seeing any type of lightning on this side of town right now...

There's no excuse or defense for missing this completely, especially if it's the only severe storm in your CWA.  Dual-pol tornado detection should be something browbeaten into anyone allowed to issue warnings.

attachicon.gifGRR_oopsies.png

Yeah this isn't good, that circulation was apparent even going back further to the southwest, the hook barely had any reflectivity but there was certainly a circulation there. A bit similar to the Goodrich tornado back in June of last year which ended up being being a EF-2

Local chase for me tonight; got some video:

Happened to see some apparent rotation on radar and hit the road; found the right spot.  Followed the tornado on the ground for about 30 minutes.  No injuries, not much damage, spent basically all of its time over open fields.  I did see a couple of porta-potties tipped over and some crop damage; that was about it.

Me neither but there definitely was CG on the ESPN Sunday Night feed along with loud thunder from the storm passing through Windsor.

Looks like the core of the cell remained just south of the stadium, so things appear to have worked out.

Did get a brief torrential downpour here from another weaker cell that had developed.

apparently there have been 13 tornadoes in Iowa with no other storm reports in the state.

LOL...from the 2000Z Day 1 outlook:

"LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WING GUSTS ARE EXPECTED TO BE THE PRIMARY SEVERE HAZARDS BUT AN ISOLATED TORNADO OR TWO MAY ALSO OCCUR."

Based on the LSRs rolling in to GRR, sounds like it might've been a strong tornado in Kent county.

I agree especially in concert with the radar signature that Tony posted. Also twitter pictures starting to come in:

Also power outages are very concentrated in that area:

I can't recall a tornado off the top of my head that has had Z >60 dBZ in the debris signature and not been strong.  Debris is not a Rayleigh scatterer, but both Mie and resonance scattering still have particle concentration N buried somewhere in their radar equations, so it makes sense that a stronger tornado that lofts more debris should have a higher reflectivity.  And for some reason, it seems casually from what I've seen that 60 dBZ is a sort of threshold.  I need to do more work on this in the future when I have time (ha!).

I've seen other offices do that as well.  Seems like it's when there may be some rotation but not enough confidence to go with a TOR?

Honestly I don't think I have other than GRR, and what is the benefit of putting it in a severe warning. It will cause people to panic or get mixed messages, and if a tornado did actually occur there wouldn't be a tornado warning out to cover it.

Highly unlikely those type of winds and the subsequent damage came from straight-line winds (given the lack of MCS/cold pool organization) or a microburst (given the diminishing low-level instability).

But we'll see as GRR goes out to do their survey...

Thanks for posting the complete warning. The new tag program has the TORNADO POSSIBLE in some severe warnings. I've never seen any CWA include that 'possible tornado' in the actual warning hazard statement except for Grand Rapids. Sioux Falls with their damage survey reluctance in June and Grand Rapids with their apparent inability to issue tornado warnings for strong tornadoes in July. At least there are several examples of what needs to be improved in the future.

That warning Boogieman posted wasn't for the Kentwood cell...
