you can always put clothes on, not much escaping heat if you are outside.

But why would you want to? Given the choice between a shirt and a light jacket in sunny and 40F and a full on winter coat in hats and gloves at 10F, who in their right mind would choose that?

I get the fascination with snow storms and the skiing industry and what not (I don't enjoy it, but I know people do). But I never understand why some people need it to be brutally cold. Wouldn't you want to enjoy that in nicer weather post-storm?

I don't think many people would choose 95/72 over 80/50 except at the beach, but the same can be said in the winter when most normal people would easily take 40 over 10.

Don't understand the "fetish" with COLD weather either.

Pretty tough getting snow in the winter with temps in the 40's, Balls cold we can take in shots unlike this winter,But really don't need Vodka cold thru out,  You need to get things to freeze up some how, And its going to have to be below 32F to achieve that

I understand that, but there seems to be some amazing fascination with brutal cold shots, and people rooting for sub-zero.

We all can guess the hhh crowd loves to be sitting indoors at 72F during a hhh spell staring out the kitchen window over their weather guage with druel dripping down their chin.

Yup just like people sitting inside in their HEAT when its 0 degrees outside and too cold to do anything.

what's the connection with -AMO and heat/humidity? (I know the connection with less snow!)

Well warm east coast summers are well correlated with a +AMO with waters usually warmer than normal just offshore and basically the whole Atlantic pattern in general supports ridging in the east.

And on the other side of the coin we have some that root for HHH, I guess to ea their own, Up here i deal with more of the former then the latter and quite fine with it

If i wanted nice weather in the winter, I probably would not pick the Northeast for living

True. Peeps who live here need to come to grips that it's gonna be cold and it's gonna snow. If I lived in OK, I'd come to terms that my house will get destroyed eventually so better get the best insurance upfront and pay for it.

Oh yeah I know, and see that regularly. Just pointing out there seems to certainly be more "excitement" over brutal cold, and a general "what the hell is wrong with you why do you like hot and humid weather" sentiment over hot weather.

Exactly, I could never see myself moving to Florida to be a permanent resident, But a visit in Feb or March, Sure

Freezes up the ponds, keeps the powder ultra light, and is a key ingredient historically in big storms.    Also feels great on the lungs.

Ha I would go with more of a burning sensation.

But you can argue that HHH is a key ingredient in severe weather, warmer ocean temperatures, and tropical weather.

So yeah to each his own I guess.

There is no doubt which season is more favored on this board, Just check the post counts, Now is it because in the summer more people are outdoors enjoying the weather and not behind a keyboard, Or because they are all snug as a bug in the rug indoors in the winter because its cold out and pass the time away chatting on a bb

I don't mind the cold because you can always bundle up for it. When it's balls hot, there is little to do for preparation.

exactly!

I'm a weird sadist about heat, tho.  Only cuz I find the synoptics that lead up to heat wave as quite trackable and fascinating.

I guess I could do without the physical impact, but still think it's interesting?  doesn't that make any sense?

The whole thing with the Sonoran Heat Release has actual simple markers to look for in the atmosphere.  They go like ...

1) antecedent flat or modestly positive PNAP flow, where plateau air is trapped in the SW and around the Sonoran air bake region of the continent.

2) troughing ...often times one known as an "outside slider" rolls down the California Coast.

3) probably the most important factor; the tele that correlates central/eastern Canada needs to go positive as this slider is-a rollin'. That lifts the mean latitude of the westerlies and either serves to retrograde WAR, or establish a new STR altogether.

1 --> 2 --> 3 -->  big ejection of EML/continental cT air with those dragon fart 850s quite tappable in a well mixe plumes pull out into the Plain and conveyor on through the Lakes/ S Canada, and eventually ...us.

Thing is, since that whole index relay and subsequent heat-related consequences can be so extreme, I am not sure why heat domes are not up there with the other big recognizable things.

Like you say, if it's cold, grab a coat.  But if you're down to nut sack on sofa for clothes and you're still sweating ...that's way more than a mere inconvenience.
