54 for a low up here this morning..

Made it down to 49f. Here at my summer home in loch sheldrake in the catskills. Elevation 1,550 ft. What a gorgeous couple of days, around 70 on Wednesday , low 70s Thursday and around 75 today. In fact this summers high was in the low 80s perfect for summer in the mountains.

only one negative departure in 10 years

Similar to the 50s where there were 8 of 10 warm summers with a streak of 4 in a row hot ones.

I was surprised that LGA was +in 2004.  All other sites were cool in that crumby summer.

sort of like 91 - 95 where 4 of 5 were blazing hot.  Also similar to 51 - 55 and most summers that decade.   Still 10 days to go but likely we'll ride +0.5 - +1.5 and leave it up to august to see if the summer as a whole can surpass 2013 +1.5

Last day to enjoy the 70 degree solar noon angle until mid to late May next year. For Floridians, that is a low sun angle already. From tomorrow through August 23rd we slump through those 60's (angles). Then it is the summer's over (fall look) as we sail through those 50's (angles) for a short 30 days from late Aug. thru Sept.  In 3 1/2 months we can all say we shoveled snow in that same noon sun angle on the other side of the winter solstice. Even the high sun like LA gets in June (79 degrees), we never ever see. We just sneak into the 70 degree territory just barely.  Florida gets the 80 degree angle stuff for a good 2 months.  I say that FLA and LA get a real tropical look from the sun in June, we get fake tropical look here.  I consider 78-80 the entry level for "high" sun angle. Shadows are only 1/5 to 1/6 in size on the ground. The 1/3 length around here in June is sort of a fake / bootleg tropical look.  Mind as well be 25 degrees temps in December with the same sun angle for a true Arctic look which we do get.... in NY. We do winter right, but sort of screw up tropics-wise. Not habitable for real palm trees and the summer sun angle would not quite cut it.

2009 also had Rock of Ages and Hair on Broadway stage musicals, so while it was cold summer, it was hot and rocking on Broadway.  Now we have #Doogieindrag (Neil Patrick Harris) with Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

Yeah, I would rank 2010-2013 as our greatest run of July heat since official records were kept.

With 91-95 and 52-55 finishing behind.

For LGA....July average temperature

2010.....82.8

2011.....80.4

2012.....80.5

2013.....81.2

1991.....78.8

1992.....75.4

1993.....80.0

1994.....80.6

1995.....79.8

Using Central Park for 1952-1955

1952....80.3

1953....77.8

1954....76.7

1955....80.9

I don't really start noticing the lower sun angle in any significance until about August 20th or a bit after, at which time the angle falls under 60 degrees as you said. I checked into the differences b/t here and Florida as your post made me curious. Florida does in fact receive 2 full months with > 80 degree sun angles, and 4 full months with > 70 degree angles. For our area, we see about 6 months with < 50 degree angles (late Sept-late March) and 6 months of > 50 degree angles, two months > 70 and two months < 30.

I guess if you wanna call the departures not being as high as ending the hot streak then alright. However the bottom line is that the departures for this month will still likely continue the theme of above normal.

cloudy here, but it's nice for outdoor activities other than beach going--took a long bike ride and didnt even break a sweat.

75/62

It's definitely a great outdoor activity day, unless that activity was sun tanning of course.
