Recommended Posts

I compiled a list of the latest first 90 degree readings at Newark going back to 1958.

These were the years which featured the temperature reaching 90 degrees for the

first time in June or later. The only time that there seemed to be any impact on the

total number of 90 degree readings for the year at Newark were the five occasions

when the first 90 occurred after June 15th. Years with the first 90 during the first half

of June had a range 7 to 40 total 90 degree days. But the years when the first

90 was reached after the 15th had a lower number of 90 degree days between

11 and 21 days.

Latest 90 degree days at Newark since 1958 and total 90 degree readings that year:

Great stats bluewave.  That 1982 analog showing up again.  Its going to be close, I think on/around 6/11-12 may be the next chance of 90 as the ridge pumps for a couple of days according to the latest guidance.

Thanks, it will be interesting to see when Newark actually reaches 90 for the first time.

Nice post bluewave. It's looking increasingly likely that Newark will end up with <20 90 degree days this summer.

Until this pattern changes from the trough/blocking off the coast going to be difficult to reach 90 but it will happen - just missed 90 in Newark Tuesday - Linden hit 90 - but the chances of a heat wave - 3 or more 90+ days in a row is low.

Thanks, confidence in the 11-21 day range for 90's would go up if we made past the 15th for the first 90 degree day.

90's from June 1-15th have proceeded both high and low numbers of 90 degree days. So a later 90 this month

would narrow down the list for us. But getting around 20 days or below  would be well below the recent averages at Newark

which would be a departure.

Newark 90 degree day averages:

10 year......29 days a year

20 year......26 days a year

30 year......27 days a year

imo we'll average above normal this summer because of high min temps

long term average max/min for June at KNYC is 93/52...Coolest minimum so far is 55 on the 1st...I don't think it will get cooler than that this month...I do think we will see our share of 90's this summer...

Looking like only the 6th time since 1958 that the first 90 at Newark occurs after June 15th.

Previous years first date of 90 degree reading and total number of 90 degree days for the year:

6-23-03.....20

6-16-82.....11

7-2-72.......21

6-19-63.....20

6-26-58.....19

  • 1 month later...

The idea that Newark would see a below average number of 90 degree days

this summer following a late first 90 is working out so far. Newark is currently

at 9 days of 90 or greater.

Newark 90 degree day averages:

10 year......29 days a year

20 year......26 days a year

30 year......27 days a year
