Crapper Jim
She was a Cat 4-5... before entering the Gulf shallow waters. I awoke the morning on her entry. It was a "non-event"... but I knew the surge might stress the levies. Barely (my thinking), it did! The following days became a testament of what might be... if a more serious breach should occur in our country. My wife, living in the UK at that time, told me stories about the interpretation from her homes... witnessing the news. In the UK... it was about, "look at how FAT those people are (that need help)". During Katrina... a lot of the world was was wondering why such well-feed people needed so much help. I was embarrassed. I'm still embarrassed. My wife wants to go back to the UK. I can't blame her. She deplores the gov here... esp., healthcare. I can't blame her... again. Katrina.... became the USs Greatest Embarrassment! I don't wanna live here, either! REALLY. Katrina was a sad event to behold! I remember watching when the flooding started, and just watched for hours as things got worse and worse! On a side note, I have been to the UK, spent 7 days in London , I wasn't to impressed with the food, that's a deal breaker for me, not a chicken wing in sight! That's why they are so skinny over there, the food is so bland , they don't like to eat!

Heh, I've spent a couple weeks in London and I agree with your assessment re: food, though to be fair if someone from halfway around the world spent a handful of nights in my town, I wouldn't expect them to know all the cuisine hotspots either. London is definitely the cleanest and most enjoyable city I've ever experienced, though most of my time spent there was in June 2012, after the Diamond Jubilee and just before the Olympics... probably fair to assume they went to extra lengths during that period. Overall I love England and hope to visit for larger blocks of time, but the dearth of snow and firearms are hard to look past in the context of long-term living. I have no shame. yotaman
I remember Katrina and the complete lack of help from both the state and federal government in helping those people trapped at the superdome and on roofs. I also remember hearing about other countries wanting to help and our government turning them down. It was truly a disgraceful time for us. But once the help started flowing, it flowed in mass. Too bad that it was the citizens who did most of the helping and not the government.
Crapper Jim
I've spent a few times in the UK. The food is awful! Even the "fish 'n chips (the English are known)" are terribly unseasoned! You can't by a drink in some of those shoppes. The English eat without consuming liquid most of the time. Forget ice! I, mostly, didn't eat... except from pre-packaged stuff. My wife, from the UK, won't eat anything outside of "bland". So my cooking, which I'm known for, goes completely untouched by her. Add to that... she will not eat cheese! No wonder I'm soooo depressed!

To me , it was as exciting of a sight as the Tower of London , or the Eye, or any other tourist attraction, and Mickey Ds has never tasted so good!!! Crapper Jim
There's actually a Burger King off all the Ms (highways in Britain)... every few miles. First morn there... I opted for "The English Breakfast"... opposite the BK. I WILL NEVER EAT A SAUSAGE... OR 'BEANS ON TOAST'... rest of my life!!! Meanwhile... what were we talking about? Crapper Jim
Shephard's pie is yummy! Actually... it's pretty good. Tastes like Sloppy Joes'... it's just encased in a pie. Funny, my English wife hates Sloppy Joes. "Honey, it's just like your pie... it's okay for a few minutes... then, I just wanna go to sleep!!!" Yorkshire Pudding was an enigma to me. It's not pudding at all!! It's just bland bread with Gravy poured all-over it! n The English seem to think it's "special"??? ? Has anyone 'evaluated' New Orleans, recently, since Katrina? What's changed???
lookingnorth
I sort of followed it as a 7-year-old. I remember my dad going on Google Earth a few weeks later to see if they had images of a flooded New Orleans. They didn't.

It's not like they update that data on a monthly basis, though.
