I had a nice trip down to the Blue Ridge Parkway & Great Smoky Mountains. Some of the higher elevations are a long ways to go before leaves coming out. It was nice to come back today to cooler temperatures.

I-81 must be the longest road ever. It felt like it was never going to end. lol

Central and northern CO rockies + eastern foothills are going to get clocked. Arapahoe Basin along the divide has already received 14" in the last 2 days. Best spring skiing in many years.

...WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 6 AM SUNDAY TO

6 AM MDT MONDAY...

* TIMING...SNOW IS EXPECTED TO FORM OVER THE CENTRAL MOUNTAINS

TONIGHT WITH RAIN INITIALLY FALLING AT ELEVATIONS BELOW 9000

FEET. THE RAIN WILL THEN CHANGE OVER TO SNOW AND BECOME MORE

WIDESPREAD LATE TONIGHT OR SUNDAY MORNING IN THE FOOTHILLS.

* SNOW ACCUMULATIONS...10 TO 20 INCHES.

* WIND/VISIBILITY...HEAVY SNOW COMBINED WITH NORTHEAST WINDS UP

TO 30 MPH MAY REDUCE VISIBILITY TO LESS THAN A QUARTER MILE AT

TIMES.

* IMPACTS...ROADS WILL BECOME SNOWPACKED AND ICY WITH HAZARDOUS

TRAVEL CONDITIONS. SOME SECONDARY ROADS IN THE FOOTHILLS AND

MOUNTAINS MAY BECOME IMPASSABLE DUE TO THE HEAVY WET SNOW. THE

HEAVY SNOW WILL ACCUMULATE ON TREE BRANCHES AND POWERLINES

POSSIBLY CAUSING SOME TO BREAK.

even downtown Denver should get a few inches

It's not terribly uncommon in May but it takes a cold mid or ull spinning upslope into the foothills to get it. Heck, that's how Denver get's 90% of their snow. E-NE surface and midlevel flow can produce unreal amounts in areas just up I-70 like Evergreen. And like here, late season stuff melts in a hurry and has limited impact once it winds down.

I'm glad they are getting a May storm and I'm jealous.

They're going up with totals in Larimer County.  We have a small (800 sq ft) cabin in Estes Park near the entrance to RMNP - looks like they are getting totally raked.  C.A.P.E. is right - it is all about upslope.  We were there in December, almost no snow (cold and dry); back in March and great snow in the mountains but Estes and the foothills areas only do well in the Spring storms, rarely see much snow until March and April, because they are east of the divide and need the upslope storms to their ESE to see heavy accumulation.
