April 26th-30th, 2014 Major Tornado Outbreak

Recommended Posts

You can see that the smallish supercells in central AR are struggling somewhat... there really isn't enough CAPE to support the strong supercells with the crazy low-level shear profiles that exist. They are also moving into less and less favorable environment thermodynamically. The action still back in OK and TX has the potential to be the more significant cells, but the stuff firing right now in AR is probably going to peter out over the next couple of hours.

-PLRASN means light sleet, rain, snow mix... the ASOS is just probably confused and its really indicating hail... not indicative of a tornado.

I think that's his signature. I thought he was actually posting it too.

There is instability (2000+ J/kg MLCAPE) moving towards the cells further SW in AR from the SE.

I've been waiting for them to strengthen and to turn right and get away from the convective plume, but so far, that has not happened.

One of my favorite multi-parameter fields off the SPC Meso page is sfc vorticity/sfc-3km MLCape, I was watching the 21z and now the 22z near Joplin, it does give me some concern for that area, although the H85 to H5 crossovers are not ideal they may be sufficient.  Didn't post map to clutter up the thread.

Edit: Wow did that verify

The stuff further south in AR certainly has a chance if they can get more discrete... I was primarily referring to the two cells that got TOR warned further north (and now have been dropped back to SVR warnings). Overall though, not super impressed with the stuff in AR, not enough separation between cells to establish good inflow.

I've been waiting for them to strengthen and to turn right and get away from the convective plume, but so far, that has not happened.

Yea this first round of cells in AR aren't really the main event in my opinion... its the set of cells further west that could end up being more substantial.
