Interesting Local 90 Degree Day Variation Since 1984

I wanted to compare how the the annual number of 90 degrees days has varied around

the area since 1984. 10 year groupings of years were used over the 30 year period from

1984 to 2013. My guess is that the decline in 90 degree days from the first 10 year interval

in NYC to the most recent was a result of increased vegetation growth around the

sensor. It's also interesting to note that there was a slight decline in 90 degree days

at EWR after first 10 year interval. There was a more significant increase in 90 degree

days at LGA and JFK after 2004. It appears that the recent rise at JFK and LGA

over the last 10 years is related to the warmer SST's over this period. It's a bit

uncertain why there was the increase at LGA while EWR saw fewer 90 degree days.

I also wonder if some of the changes may have been related to the change to ASOS

and possible different sittings at the airports?

Interesting stats bluewave.  I have been tracking the major NY/NJ sites the last few years.    Curious if you have the individual numbers by site for those years.  I know unc might.

I am starting to look into some summer analogs - 1960, 1986, 2002 all some decent analogs.

It's interesting to see how LGA passed NYC for second place between 94-96.

It was more typical during the 50s through the 70s for NYC and EWR to have a similar

number of 90 degree days during the years with a high number of 90 degree days.

Those are three woppingly different years in terms of +90's; 1960, almost none, 1986, about average but all before mid-July, and 2002 a scorcher.
