klw
Thermometer is saying 1f right now and it is always 2f too warm. this morning is got down to -6f here. I had to head out when the car thermometer said -4f but within a mile I had gotten to the bottom of the hill and it said -12f.
tamarack
Down to -8 here, might tie or eclipse this AM's -9 by my 9 PM obs time. Without the clouds, this would be a -25 sunrise here. I'll take the snow.
MaineJayhawk
-6.7F here. Yeah, were it not for the clouds racing this way we'd be sub -20F. I was noticing the temps for northern Minnesota for the next few days ... lows in the -20s, highs subzero. I miss those days.

CardinalWinds
Down to -6 here, but I think we've bottomed out for the night...starting to get some high cirrus. It's amusing really. I've lived here for 13 years now, but before that I lived in Panama City, Fl. for 18 years. I remember what a big deal it was on the two or three occasions during that time that we got down below 20. And the two times we had a measurable snowfall. One was just a dusting but the other was an inch or maybe two. The whole town completely closed down during the latter event and the huge bridge that links Panama City with Panama City Beach was a riot. They were only letting one car at a time cross the bridge. Such chaos! Hurricanes down there were the weather equivalent to huge snow events up here, excitement wise.
Allenson
7pm low temps so far... BML -11F HIE -11F IZG -3F LEB -3F Down to 3F here. It was down to -5 when I got home last evening and dropped further to -9 by the time I hit the sack at 11pm. Now, it's all the way up to 12 with the first light snows starting to break out here--earlier than I expected it to start too. Game on. Down to -6 here, but I think we've bottomed out for the night...starting to get some high cirrus. Howdy--another Vermont person on board!
MaineJayhawk
Was -7F when I crashed at 10:30p. Up to 3F at 4:00a, currently 6.8F. Snow has just started to fall.

powderfreak
Very interesting temperature spread at Stowe this morning... a classic WAA aloft pattern with strong inversion below. Here's a temperature profile from around 5:45am when I got to work... you can almost get a nice low level sounding given the terrain variations around here: 3,900ft...18F (NOAA) 3,600ft...16F (Snowmaking wx station) 2,400ft...7F (Snowmaking wx station) 1,550ft...9F (Snowmaking wx station) 800ft...12F (My house) As usual, the coldest pocket as at the base of the ski resort and up into the mid-elevational band... in these WAA patterns, the coldest pocket always seems to be in that 1,500-2,500ft range. On BTV's homepage it says the 3,900ft Mansfield station is already up to 21F... still holding 9F here at the base, so there's a pretty decent thermal gradient on the hill somewhere. http://www.erh.noaa.gov/btv/html/mansfield.php
red
Woke up around 4:30 to go to the gym and I had a temp of -6. Truck thermometer registered -11 in places on the way to the gym. Now at the house it's -1 and cloudy. Winter storm watch here went to an Advisory. Still my point and click gives me a storm total of 6-10" which is more than I was expecting. The Friday storm is still looking good.

powderfreak
Forgot to post these yesterday... saw an awesome sun pillar thanks to all the ice crystals in the sub-zero cold yesterday morning.
powderfreak
Another cool optical scene caused by ice crystals yesterday was the presence of halos and rouge rainbows everywhere. Skies were clear, but we were actually accumulating ice crystals out of thin air at one point.
Allenson
Nice sun pillar, Powderfreak. Always a great optical phenomena. We get them here occasionally in the morning. Anyway, light snow falling & staring to pick up. 15F.

Temperatures: 3,900ft... 25F 3,600ft... 22F 1,550ft... 12F Will be interesting to see how high the temps get up near 4,000ft today... they continue to rise a lot faster than we do down here at 1,500ft. DEEPSTUFF
Going to be a while before it snows here with a cold dry airmass in place...... I thought that too. But it started snowing almost as soon as the radar was ontop of me. Not much virga to speak of which was surprising with such a cold dry airmass. klw
It is always interesting to watch the thermal profile on Mt. Washington on days like this. http://www.mountwashington.org/weather/ I could not get the picture to copy with numbers but it is currently: 10f at 2300 feet 32.3 at 4000 feet 19 at the summit
tamarack
Temp was near zero at 7 AM IMBY, afterbottoming out about -15, ahead of the clouds. No fl;akes yet here in AUG; probably an hr or so away. Foothills have minimal WSW forecast, 4-8", with most non-snow precip now omitted. Weekend/early next week looks frigid, with minus teens and 20s, and maxima single numbers (above or below) for Sun-Mon.
Allenson
About a half inch has fallen so far in Lebanon...airport is reporting Vis dropping below 1 mile now. I'm in Hanover now and yep, seems like a half-inch or so by now. Steady light snow falling. I'm feeling 6" out of this puppy. Thereafter, it seems we're quite locked into winter with another light snow event at the week's end before an arctic surge.

Not much virga to speak of which was surprising with such a cold dry airmass. I'll vouch for that. Once the returns were overhead it was time to get down to business. Started snowing in PWM about an hour ago and the parking lot is turning white. Snow growth not the greatest as others have noted in the storm threads. Not overly concerned. Noticing the RUC came in quite colder in its most recent incarnation (terrible model as it is). NAM has been pretty insistent on keeping it cool. We'll see... southwest flows always bring in the sleet when you don't think it... I've thought the it would be Snow to freezing drizzle for a glaze... I like that the sleet line has stopped for the most part, and Keene already has got 3.
J.Spin
Nice pics, Allenson. I really enjoy seeing landscape shots of that part of Vermont as I'm not overly familiar with the topography, aside from what you can see from I-89. Looks like a nice mid-winter day in Vermont! I'm in the same boat as Powderfreak as I don't often get over there, but Galusha Hill sure looks like a nice place for a ski. Thanks for the pictures!
