vttaconics
Hi folks. I do quite a bit of lurking here and not much posting. I teach middle school science and would like to do a unit on weather map creation and analysis. I am in desperate need of an easily accessible and concise collection of current, daily observations from stations in each of the fifty states that can be used to plot basic national weather maps. All data sources that I've found so far are complex and cumbersome to work with... Suggestions??

Juliancolton
If you go to this site: http://vortex.plymouth.edu/ - and click on any of the states, you'll get some (most?) of the latest decoded METAR observations from that state. If you need a pre-plotted national map: http://climate.cod.edu/data/surface/US_zoom/contour/current/USZOOM.raw.gif. Hi-res with small plots for ease of contouring, if you're able to print it big enough. For a smaller version with fewer station plots: http://www.aos.wisc.edu/weatherdata/sfc/sfc_us_map.gif.
