Tuesday March 25 2014

Throughout the night of Monday March 24 the snowstorm gathered strength. The night before, the low had fallen to 21. Then Monday night it fell to 25 degrees. The ground became very cold.

As a coastal developed off the southeast coast early Tuesday, snow began to develop over northern Virginia. It was supposed to have started at 9am. I stayed up all night watching the radar. Then it started to snow at 7am. I tried to go to bed but the snow continued and I watched as it began to accumulate on the mulch and on bushes and on a wooden fence. By 8am it was beginning to turn some north facing lawn slopes white. By 9am all lawns were turning white. I finally dozed til 1030am then glanced out the window. It was pouring moderate snow and I could see that the lawn had at least an inch and a half of snow and that the roads and sidewalks were turning white.

It was very hard to believe. It was late March. The forecast was for 2 to 4 inches of snow but I thought I would get an inch of slush and that Leesburg would get 4 inches.

Then I slept til 1pm then got up and looked out at my snow stake. 3.5 inches!!!!

I was stunned. How could this happen on the tropical fall line in late March?

A strong snowband hit Dale City with HUGE snowflakes that quickly built the snowpack up to 4 inches. Then we were in the dry slot which persisted til 530pm. We topped out at 37 degrees and the snow melted/compacted back to 3 inches. The snow on the roads melted.

Later I went out and drove around since the roads were only wet. We had very close to 100 percent areal snow cover. It was hard to believe since it was late March. The north facing lawns of the Glendale Slope were all covered in 3 inches of fresh snow. Leninskaya was a ski resort. Then I took a reverent walk in Delaney Valley. It had 3 inches of snow, 100 percent areal coverage. The low lying areas were water filled but the water was filled with snow.

Today's snow cover exceeded the requirements for increasing the days of snow cover counter by one day, to 54 days so far this season.

I had never expected to see this again til 2015.

March 2013 we got 3.5 inches snow on March 6, 1 inch of snow on March 17 and 2.5 inches of snow on March 25.

March 2014 we got 5 inches of snow on March 3, 8 inches of snow on March 17 and 4 inches of snow on March 25

This March we saw 17 inches of snow for the month. That's as much snow as we normally get in one ENTIRE WINTER SEASON here in Dale City! Today's snow, 4 inches is normal JANUARY climo for one snowstorm. So what does that make it when we get the 4 inches in LATE MARCH????? Or 8 inches of snow on St Paddys Day?

We've now seen 48 inches on the season. I am making a run at nzucker's New York snow total on this season of 57 inches. The only thing that saved his 8ss was the lack of classic blocking and the track of the storm. If the storm had made a direct hit on N VA and DC, I would have gotten at least 18 inches of snow and the tropical fall line would have left nzucker's 57 inch seasonal total in New York State choking in the proverbial snow dust lol. I would have made a run at weathafella's and Ginxy's seasonal snow totals too.

There is no doubt about it - We are a snow town. Book THAT for 2014-2015!

SNE had better look out. Their seasonal snow totals are not safe, not even in March, especially not at the hands of the Jebman or of the powerful tropical fall line. The DC Crew made a wreck of the so called sne crew. Next year we'll do even better.

We get snow, and we score. SNE missed out again.

So this storm for the just east of I-95 folks was a Stealers Wheel song.  Snow to the west of me, snow to the east, stuck in the middle with zilch.

Lol well I only got a little over an inch in northern Caroline county. Driving 6-7 miles east in that death band there was 4"+. So close but yet so far. It was mostly DE and lower eastern shore that cashed in on the heavy snow. The upper and western parts didn't see much more than an inch.

Def was way better for people around DC yesterday - and west judging from Jeb's latest hymn. I ended up with 1.5" (roughly).

It's weird, as good as the March snows have been for northern VA over to DC, markedly less so up my way in Maryland (balt area). The set-ups have been way more favorable when the snow actually has been falling for areas south of Balt.

10.5 inches at my house in March is a nice total, but way less than what it has been 50 miles to the south the way things have gone.

We are truly sick of the white stuff.  Seven inches are here at least.  Something icy happened at the end too.  The roads are very slick.  It is very windy, cold and unpleasant. I'd gladly give it away if I could to all of you that wanted more than you got.

I hope it melts ASAP and we can get on with Spring.

and way more than 50 miles to your north, which have seen next to nothing this month. Any mid-Atlantic snow lover who sees 10" of snow in March should be ecstatic because it doesn't happen often. And honestly I thought it was nice to see the ridiculous gradient even out a bit this month.

I still don't understand why people on this board lecture others on how they should feel.

I didn't say I felt good or bad in the post, was making an observation. I also observe that my area has a ton less snow from D/J/F than areas 50 miles to the north. A few extra inches doesn't even that out in March.

It was, in the end, an observation. For some reason you and others insist on jumping on that and making pronouncements.
