not putting a lot of stock in this but we may have to keep an eye on some of the frontogen late this afternoon - northeastern VA might get in on some of that BRIEFLY - if BL temps fall at the same time as sunset then things could BRIEFLY get interesting lol.

not holding my breath but this storm will be pretty dynamic

then again, I am probably just a bit too far west

If you live in east MD and central Del better look out about 7pm damn I'm frackin' jealous

NWS has upped the snow totals in the IAD area:

...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM EDT THIS EVENING...

* PRECIPITATION TYPE...SNOW.

* ACCUMULATIONS...2 TO 4 INCHES...WITH THE HIGHEST AMOUNTS NORTH AND WEST OF INTERSTATE 95.

* TIMING...SNOW WILL BEGIN DURING THE MID-MORNING HOURS. THE HEAVIEST SNOW IS EXPECTED LATE THIS MORNING INTO THE MID AFTERNOON...TAPERING OFF THIS EVENING.

* TEMPERATURES...MID TO UPPER 20S THIS MORNING...MID 30S THIS AFTERNOON...THEN LOW 30S EARLY THIS EVENING.

* WINDS...SOUTHEAST 5 TO 10 MPH...BECOMING NORTH 10 TO 15 MPH THIS EVENING.

* IMPACTS...ROADS WILL QUICKLY BECOME SNOW COVERED AND SLIPPERY DURING THE MID-MORNING. MOST SURFACES WILL BECOME WET AND SLUSHY THIS AFTERNOON WITH TEMPERATURES RISING ABOVE FREEZING.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY MEANS THAT PERIODS OF SNOW WILL CAUSE TRAVEL DIFFICULTIES. BE PREPARED FOR SLIPPERY ROADS AND LIMITED VISIBILITIES...AND USE CAUTION WHILE DRIVING.

Just read this from WPC Heavy Snow Disco. Lots of radar watching today.

THE SHORT WAVE DIVING INTO THE SOUTHERN STREAM POSITION EARLY THIS
MORNING WAS SHOWING SIGNS THAT IT WOULD DIG FURTHER SOUTH AND WEST
THAT PREVIOUS SOLUTIONS. SNOW ASSOCIATED WITH THE NORTHERN STREAM
SHORT WAVE WAS ENTERING THE OHIO VALLEY EARLY THIS MORNING. THE
LIFT ASSOCIATED WITH THE SHORT WAVE MAY END UP BEING DISORGANIZED.
THAT COUPLED WITH BOUNDARY LAYER ISSUES AHEAD OF THE SHORT
WAVE...AS WELL AS THE LATE MARCH WARMING...COULD RESULT IN
PROBLEMS WITH ACCUMULATING SNOW OUTSIDE OF THE TERRAIN ACROSS THE
MID ATLANTIC THROUGH MID TO LATE AFTERNOON.

THE IMPLICATION OF THE POSITIONAL DIFFERENCE OF THE SHORT WAVE
THIS MORNING COULD BE TO ALLOW THE SURFACE LOW THAT DEVELOPS IN
RESPONSE TO THE NEGATIVELY TILTED TROUGH TO DEEPENING MORE RAPIDLY
NEAR THE MID ATLANTIC COAST CENTERED AROUND 00Z WED. THERE IS
INCREASING EVIDENCE THAT THE DEVELOPING DEFORMATION ZONE WITH THE
SURFACE LOW AND NEGATIVELY TILTED TROUGH MAY FOCUS ON THE MID
ATLANTIC COAST AROUND 00Z. MODEL SOUNDINGS SUGGEST THAT MOISTURE
AND LIFT IN THE DENDRITIC GROWTH ZONE MAY ALLOW THE BOUNDARY LAYER
ISSUES TO BECOME NEGATED BY INCREASED PRECIPITATION RATES FROM
EAST OF DC IN MARYLAND ACROSS DE INTO SOUTHERN NJ. IN
ADDITION...MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES STEEPEN...ALLOWING BETTER LIFT
INTO THE DENDRITIC GROWTH ZONE. AN AREA OF 4 TO 6 INCHES OF SNOW
WAS PLACED HERE...WITH MOST OF THIS OCCURRING AFTER 00Z WED.

I'm very proud of the use of frontogenesis in this thread.

Things that certain mets said last week that were dead wrong:

1. "There were convective feedback errors causing the depictions we were seeing." Looks like today's setup is going down just as portrayed. That high QPF with southern stream wave is actually strong frontogenetical forcing too.

2."It's going East because of lack of blocking." Yeah that huge Alaskan Block and low over SE Canada led to record/near record cold and a Mid Atlantic snowfall. Try again with your pattern recognition skills.

3. "The double low structure was model error." Nope, in fact they did a great job seeing the specifics of something more complicated than humans make it out to be.

4. "This was a certain hit/miss because of seasonal trends." Actually, the problem is the mid-level southern wave was just a hair ahead of the phased-up northern stream...the only thing that prevented a sub 960mb monster from destroying the Northeast. But this is why you don't make any certain calls in the medium range with waffling ensemble guidance. When every ensemble suite is shifting back and forth in the MR, there is no such thing as a "trend."

Thanks HM. I think most of us dropped the coastal stuff days ago so we didn't pay attention too much to the wobbles. Luckily the ul energy swinging through took over in here. Really fun feature to track and now watch what appears to be an over performer. I find this subforum really smart from both mets and hobbyists. It's been a great place for me to learn over the last 7 years and the disco is generally excellent. I probably speak for all of us when I say that it's great having you come by and share. I hope you make the MA forum your second home.

Think I scored on the frontogenesis stuff but still hugged climo a little too much. I might always bust on late and early season events.

Writing was on the wall last night at least that this tips boom.

We're scarred from last year. I think it's that simple. Expect the worst mentality. Next time we have late season snow we'll be all cocky and bust high on our calls.

It's a lot easier to boom late season if you get rates etc. Mentioned somewhere on CWG last night, well here too I guess.. and others pointed it out.. the cold air is quite available just off the surface. If this was nighttime we'd probably have taken all the qpf at 10:1+ ratios. There's not a ton of precedent for a decent snow during the day this late... moreso in the favored hilltops etc.  It will be interesting to see how DC does the next 4-6 hours. The lowlands are probably kinda cooked at least.. tho we laid a good cover early which is a big help overall.  May have already hit peak snow depth tho. Hi res keep us above freezing for the duration once above.  We are good closers Matt would say.

The title of this thread is Season Finale. We may have one more event in the wheel house if the 180-198hr EURO is correct. It is a Miller B but a nice negative tilt trough and timing is decent. I wouldn't rule out an early April Mid Atlantic snow (No Foolin ;-))
