AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BALTIMORE MD/WASHINGTON DC
400 AM EDT MON MAR 17 2014

.SYNOPSIS...

-- Changed Discussion --

LOW PRESSURE WILL PASS SOUTH OF THE AREA AND MOVE OFF THE CAROLINA COAST TODAY. A WEDGE OF HIGH PRESSURE IS EXPECTED TO RESIDE OVER THE AREA THROUGH MID WEEK...WITH A COLD FRONT CROSSING THE REGION ON WEDNESDAY.

-- End Changed Discussion --

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

-- Changed Discussion --

WINTER HEADLINES CONTINUE UNTIL 2 PM EARLY THIS AFTERNOON. NORTHERN MARYLAND WAS UPGRADED TO A WINTER STORM WARNING EARLIER IN THE NIGHT. SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS WERE ALSO TWEAKED UPWARD ACROSS MUCH OF THE WARNING AREA EXCEPT FOR LOWER SOUTHERN MARYLAND. SEVERAL BANDS HAVE BEEN OBSERVED ACROSS THE CWA THROUGH THE NIGHT...WITH BOUTS OF MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOWFALL IN THEM. EXACT LOCATION OF BANDS CAN BE DIFFICULT TO PINPOINT TOO MUCH IN ADVANCE...BUT BANDS SETTING UP IN NORTHERN MARYLAND AS EVIDENCED BY THE RADAR WAS SUPPORT FOR THE UPGRADE TO WARNING EARLIER. BASED ON RADAR EXTRAPOLATIONS...THE HEAVIEST SNOW WILL OCCUR OVER THE WASHINGTON-BALTIMORE METRO AREA NOW THROUGH DAYBREAK...THEN SEVERAL MORE HOURS OF LIGHT SNOW CAN BE EXPECTED THROUGH THE REST OF THE MORNING PER UPSTREAM OBS FURTHER WEST IN VA/WV. SREFS HANGS ONTO POPS FOR MEASURABLE SNOW LONGER...AND HAVE TRIMMED POPS/EXITED PRECIP A LITTLE SOONER THAN SREFS. STAYED CLOSE TO MAV/MET FOR MAXIMA TODAY.

-- End Changed Discussion --

&&

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...

-- Changed Discussion --

SFC HIGH STALLS OVER THE ST LAWRENCE VALLEY WITH A RIDGE/WEDGE PERSISTENT OVER THE MID-ATLANTIC UNTIL THE COLD FRONT MOVES THROUGH LATE WEDNESDAY. SFC RIDGE AXIS LOOKS TO HOLD STEADY TONIGHT INTO TUESDAY NIGHT WHICH KEEPS AN ONSHORE SFC FLOW AND MOISTURE ADVECTION. IN FACT...AN UPR TROUGH WILL BUILD OVER THE REGION TUESDAY SO THERE WILL BE SUBSIDENCE. HOWEVER...THE ONSHORE FLOW WILL SATURATE THE LEVELS BELOW THE INVERSION AND PRODUCE LIGHT PRECIP OR DRIZZLE. TEMPERATURES WILL BE NEAR OR BELOW FREEZING...SO FREEZING DRIZZLE/RAIN IS POSSIBLE AS CRYSTALS DO NOT FORM WELL UNTIL BELOW MINUS 4C. WARM AIR ADVECTION AHEAD OF THE NEXT COLD FRONT LOOKS TO END THE FREEZING RAIN POTENTIAL BY WEDNESDAY. LIKELY POPS FOR SHOWERS AHEAD OF THE COLD FRONT FOR WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON. MAX TEMPS MID 40S TO LOW 50S IN SLY FLOW.

-- End Changed Discussion --

&&

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
ACTIVE NORTHERN STREAM STORM TRACK WILL KEEP A ROLLER COASTER TYPE
FORECAST FOR THE EXTENDED PERIOD. SHOWERS WITH PREFRONTAL TROUGH
LOOK TO BE ONGOING ACROSS I-95 AND EAST BUT PUSHING EAST AS COLD
FRONT AND DRY WEDGE PUSHES IN FROM THE WEST. CAA BEHIND FRONT WILL
KNOCK TEMPERATURES DOWN FOR THURSDAY NIGHT BEFORE RETURN FLOW SETS
IN ON FRIDAY AHEAD OF THE NEXT APPROACHING UPPER TROUGH OVER THE
SOUTHERN GREAT LAKES REGION. TRAILING SURFACE COLD FRONT WITH THIS
LOW WILL PUSH THROUGH SATURDAY...WITH SCATTERED RAIN/SNOW SHOWERS
POSSIBLE.

Looks like the snow shield should move out in the next 2 hours or so... but there are snow showers in southern West Virginia moving ENE/NE and those, if it holds together, should move through the DC area later this morning into early afternoon, according to the radar.
